HAWKS SUMMER LEAGUE TAKES FLIGHT

HAWKS SUMMER LEAGUE TAKES FLIGHT

ETOBICOKE, ON: A promising preseason began for the Humber men's basketball team as they faced Charleston Southern University Buccaneers in summer league action August 9 at the Humber Athletic Centre.

The defending provincial champions of the 2016 season started the first quarter off with high energy and good pace. Holding their own, the Hawks battled to keep the score close at 25-21 for CSU.

As the second quarter started, the Hawks quickly fell to the pressure of the Buccaneers, both offensively and defensively. With a bench full of fresh, eager legs, interim head coach Patrick Au, subbed in some new recruits, allowing them to test their wings for the first time. Despite some powerful blocks from Tyrone Dickson (Scarborough) and undeniable hustle from freshman Cham Ujullo (Gambella), the Hawks trailed 41-27 at the half.

With a 14-point lead, CSU took the court with confidence in the second half, capitalizing on every Humber mistake. As the game came to a close, Humber continued to play with determination, drive and passion until the final seconds ran off the clock. At the conclusion of the game, the tough Division I team from South Carolina was victorious, 83-63.

Despite the loss, the Hawks coaching staff was able to better evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of their 2016-17 squad which features eight returning student-athletes.

For Humber, the OCAA season will begin October 26 when the Hawks will host the Fanshawe Falcons.
