CCAA names five Humber members to the Hall of Fame

ETOBICOKE – The CCAA announced Thursday that five of the very best to ever don the ‘H’ will be among the 11 selections from the OCAA to get enshrined into the CCAA Hall of Fame. The inductees from Humber will be Germain Sanchez (Soccer), Ray Chateau (Golf), Andrew DaSilva (Soccer), Brad Kerfoot (Golf), and Joanna Vitale (Soccer).

The 2023 CCAA Hall of Fame Banquet will take place on June 12 in Niagara Falls at the DoubleTree Fallsview Resort.

“It’s incredible to see how the CCAA’s Hall of Fame has continued to expand over the past few years,” said Vince Amato, CCAA President. “The quality of the inductees speaks to the accomplishments of our members and conferences.”

The 2023 class from Humber combined to capture 42 CCAA and 71 OCAA medals, including an astounding 22 national and 49 provincial titles.

The CCAA Hall of Fame was established in 2015. Including this year's induction, membership will expand to 74 individuals.

Humber will now have seven members enshrined in the CCAA Hall of Fame.

Ray Chateau (Men's Golf Coach | 2001 - 2012)

Easily the most decorated coach in the history of Humber College Athletics, Ray Chateau served 12 seasons as head golf coach and provided the blueprint for building one of the nation’s top collegiate programs.

Chateau’s tenure was marked by consistency, highlighted by ten CCAA national championships and 50 overall tournament victories.  Against the top collegiate golfers in Canada, his team captured three RCGA University/College titles and placed four additional times on the podium.

Several individuals have flourished under Chateau’s watchful eye, as six of his players also captured individual CCAA championships.  He produced 22 CCAA All-Canadian selections during his 12-year tenure, including a record four selections in 2010.

His ability to develop talent and his team’s ability to perform did not go unnoticed.  On six occasions, Chateau represented Canada as the head coach at the FISU World University Games.  His Team Canada squads finished fourth in 2006 and fifth in 2010.

In 2012, Chateau was the recipient of the CCAA Coaching Excellence Award, becoming the first non-basketball or volleyball coach to receive the honour. Chateau was later inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame in 2017.

After Chateau made the leap from golf coach to athletic director, his accomplishments took a back seat as he began to build Humber into the top athletics program in the nation. This was finally rectified in 2022 when his banner was finally put into the rafters to hang with the all-time legends of Humber.

Andrew DaSilva (Men's Soccer | 2008 - 2011)

Andrew DaSilva made an immediate impact when he joined the Hawks in 2008, leading the division in scoring with 12 tallies in 11 matches and earning his first of two consecutive CCAA All-Canadian selections.

The following season he moved from striker back to his natural spot in the midfield, leading Humber to an undefeated 11-0-1 regular season – becoming just the second player in program history to earn CCAA Player of the Year honours.

In his final season, he helped the Hawks capture the program’s sixth provincial title and a CCAA bronze – Humber’s first national podium finish in nine seasons.

After three seasons in the navy and gold, DaSilva retired sixth all-time in scoring with 19 tallies in 29 matches.

DaSilva's fine play was not limited to the outdoor pitch, as he led Humber to two OCAA indoor gold medals in the two years he competed for Ontario titles, once being named an OCAA Championship All-Star.

After being inducted into the Humber Hall of Fame in 2011, DaSilva was inducted into the OCAA Hall in 2017.

Brad Kerfoot (Golf | 2001 - 2004)

Brad Kerfoot was one of the most influential golfers in the early years of Humber's decade of dominance provincially and nationally and a significant player on the team that won the 2004 RCGA university/college national golf championship.

Beginning in 2001, Kerfoot was a part of three OCAA provincial and three CCAA national men's team championships, with his scores contributing to each title.

2003 was a magical season for Kerfoot, who captured both an OCAA and CCAA individual silver medal. The following spring, Kerfoot completed the triple crown, leading the Hawks to the program's first RCGA university/college championship. He opened the tournament by firing a two-under-par 69, eventually winning the individual title by eight strokes, while his team won the title by a combined 22 strokes. His brilliant performance saw him named the captain of the Team Canada squad at the 2004 FISU Golf Championship in Korat, Thailand.

After his dominant 2003-04 campaign, Kerfoot became the first golfer to be named the Humber male athlete of the year.

In 2015, Kerfoot was inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame.

Germain Sanchez (Men's Soccer Coach | 1992 - 2013)

The face of Humber soccer for over two decades, Germain Sanchez was the undisputed leader in helping the Hawks become a national power. Sanchez led his squads to three CCAA national championships and eight OCAA provincial titles while being recognized as the top coach in the nation, twice.

After decades of difficulty establishing a varsity soccer program at Humber College, Sanchez was brought in to lead the program once the sport was reintroduced to the varsity lineup in 1993 after an 11-year hiatus.

It only took one season for Sanchez to build a provincial champion, as the Hawks would capture the program’s first provincial title in 1994 with a 3-2 victory over Mohawk.

He followed that season up with a more impressive 1995 campaign, leading Humber to its first national title – the fifth in Humber Athletics history – while finishing with an unbeaten record of 11-0-1.

Sanchez built a program based on consistency, and in 20 seasons at the helm, he only lost 16 conference matches and never finished with a winning percentage below 0.563. He took the Hawks to eight CCAA tournament appearances, finishing on the podium seven times. His squads qualified for the conference postseason in every season and only failed to make the final four on two occasions.

He coached 16 CCAA All-Canadians, including national player of the year recipients Luigi Della Rovere (1997) and Andrew DaSilva (2009).

On the indoor front, his teams had quite a streak as well. Humber won eight OCAA championships over a nine-year span between 1998 and 2006 and a dozen overall. Sanchez's indoor teams earned 17 OCAA indoor medals, including four silver and one bronze.

Beyond the wins and losses, Sanchez positively touched the lives of hundreds of student-athletes, leaving an ever-lasting impact on the OCAA. Two of his assistants would go on to capture national titles as head coaches: fellow OCAA Hall of Famer Vito Colangelo and his successor, Michael Aquino.

In 2017, Sanchez was inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame.

Joanna Vitale (Women's Soccer | 1999 - 2003)

Joanna Vitale is the best pure-goal scorer ever to don the navy and gold. She led her division in scoring in all four seasons while leading the conference three times.

Vitale retired as the all-time leading scorer in the OCAA, holding the record for 14 seasons. Her team-record 56 tallies in 39 regular-season matches remain a program-best to this day, and she still holds the records for four of the top five scoring seasons for the Hawks.

As a rookie, Vitale led the conference in scoring while leading the Hawks to the program’s first-ever provincial title while earning championship most valuable player honours. The Hawks would go on to successfully defend their title over the next two seasons without losing a match.

Vitale and the Hawks made Humber history during the 2000 national championship tournament, capturing the first women’s team sport national medal in school history, the CCAA bronze medal in British Columbia. That magical season saw Vitale become the first female student-athlete in Humber history to garner CCAA and OCAA Player of the Year honours.

Vitale made more Humber history in 2002, becoming the first female student-athlete in Humber history to earn three career CCAA All-Canadian selections while being named the OCAA Female Athlete of the Year - across all sports.

In 2007, Joanna was inducted into the OCAA Hall of Fame.
