2022 Season Preview: Women's Soccer

Humber women's soccer returns to the pitch Saturday afternoon against the Fanshawe Falcons in London.

2021 Highlights
  • The Hawks captured the OCAA bronze medal, defeating Seneca in overtime, 3-2. Humber has finished on the podium for five straight seasons.
  • The Hawks reached the 11th spot last season in the CCAA national ranking.
  • Mauro Ongaro concluded his brilliant 25-year career, amassing a record of 230-56-29 and retired as the all-time winningest coach in OCAA women's soccer history.
  • Kaitlynn Russell became the first player in program history to be named the OCAA Rookie of the Year, averaging a new team record with 2.17 goals-per-match.
At the Helm

Jose Caro takes over the vacant role left by Coach Ongaro after spending the past seven seasons as an assistant coach. Coach Caro was a four-year starter with the men's squad, capturing back-to-back national titles in 2012 and 2013. Kat Conde (8th season) and Marcelo Capozzolo (2nd season) will join Coach Caro on his staff.

Season Opener

Humber has won 14 of its last 15 season openers dating back to 2005.

Fresh Faces

Seven players will be donning the navy and gold for the first time this season:

  1. Emma Czernuszka, Midfield, Toronto – appeared in 46 career regular-season caps for McMaster from 2015 to 2018, recording four tallies.
  2. Grace Van Hal, Defence, Toronto – appeared in four caps for the SLC Surge last season.
  3. Isabella Bernardi, Keeper, Richmond Hill – making first postsecondary appearance.
  4. Rose Policelli, Defence, Woodbridge – making first postsecondary appearance.
  5. Emily Robitaille, Defence, Mississauga – making first postsecondary appearance.
  6. Gabriela Gatto, Defence, Toronto – making first postsecondary appearance.
  7. Chantel Spalla, Forward, Mississauga – making first postsecondary appearance.
  8. Akayla Denisi, Keeper, Brampton – making first postsecondary appearance.
Postseason

The Hawks will be looking to win their first OCAA title since 2012, with the championship tournament being hosted by Durham College from October 20-22, 2022.
