Jose Caro named head coach of Humber’s women’s soccer program

ETOBICOKE – Humber athletic director Ray Chateau announced today that Jose Caro has been hired as the new head coach for the Humber women's soccer program. Caro becomes the third head coach in program history after spending the past seven seasons as an assistant coach with the Hawks.

"Jose is an innovative young coach who has a tremendous soccer IQ," Ray Chateau said. "He has a proven track record of success and we hold his approach to team building in high regard."

A Canada Soccer C License Trained Coach, Caro has been coaching soccer for more than a decade, beginning with the Brampton Youth Soccer Club in 2009. In 2016, he coached with the FCT club, champions of the 2016 Tottenham Hotspurs Invitational Tournament in Maryland and also West Toronto United FC, capturing the 2018 Ontario indoor provincial championships and the GPS NY college showcase championships. He also led a Woodbridge squad in 2016 with Hall of Famer Filomena Aprile, which went 12-0-3 with 47 goals and seven against - comprised mostly of Humber players.

"I want to say thank you to Ray Chateau and Michael Kopinak for giving me the opportunity to coach the women's soccer program," said Coach Caro. "This program has a rich history of success, thanks in part to the coaches and incredible student-athletes who have represented the Hawks."

Hall of Fame head coaches Mauro Ongaro and Vince Pileggi started the program in 1995 and went on to capture three national bronze medals and 17 indoor and outdoor titles over the next 25 seasons. Coach Caro knows filling their shoes will not be an easy task but under their tutelage, he has been set up to take the program to the next level.

"This program would not be where it is today without the incredible efforts of Coach Ongaro and Pileggi," added Caro. "Coaching alongside Mauro the last couple of years has been an incredible learning experience. He is a true gentleman and a phenomenal human being and there is not a moment where I can say he did not give it his all and I cannot thank him enough for his mentorship over the years."

Caro has had success on the pitch as well, picking up the sport at the age of four. For six years he learned at the School of Universidad Católica soccer development in Chile before he moved to Brampton with his family in 2001. There he captured a ROPSSAA and OFSAA championship in 2005 with St. Augustine Catholic Secondary School.

He went on to be a four-year starter for the Humber men's soccer team, capturing back-to-back national championships in 2012 and 2013. Caro graduated from the University of Guelph-Humber with a Bachelor of Psychology before earning a master's degree in Applied Behavioral Analysis from Western University.

Coach Caro is also the head coach of the Elite Soccer Academy senior and U21 squads of the Ontario Women's Soccer League (OWSL), where he will keep the majority of the Humber soccer squad competing year-round.

"I have been able to observe the lack of continuity and opportunities for many players during the spring and summer months leading into the fall OCAA season," continued Coach Caro. "The goal is to continue to provide the team with opportunities to play and develop, whereas in the fall season, time constraints prevent us from trying more things on the field. We also have other players who have joined with League One Ontario Premier and Reserve who will be continuing their development and success."

"Alongside Marcelo Capozzolo and Kat Conde, we are ready to provide the team with success on and off the field, as we all successfully navigated the student-athlete experience as former Humber Hawk players ourselves."

Since joining the Humber coaching staff in 2015, the Hawks have captured eight indoor and outdoor OCAA medals and have accumulated an overall record of 58-15-5 (.776).
