Women's Soccer lose heartbreaker in CCAA bronze semifinal

VAUGHAN – Humber women's soccer 2021 season came to an end Friday afternoon, falling to conference rivals Fanshawe Falcons in a penalty shootout, 5-4.

With a trip to the CCAA bronze medal match on the line, Fanshawe got on the board first in the 28th minute when a cross from Kayla McQueen was buried by Alysia King for the first tally of the match.

Looking for the equalizer, Humber struck in the 38th minute. Senior Breanna Senfner's cross into the box bounced off of a Fanshawe defender and found the boot of Kaitlynn Russell, who scored her second goal of the tournament.

Fanshawe's quick-paced transition game struck again just before the break when a corner from the Hawks was taken the distance of the field. King broke through the defence and found a streaking Lauryn Soares who gave Fanshawe the lead heading into halftime, 2-1.

Humber controlled possession in much of the second half but was unable to generate any scoring opportunities. Finally, with less than three minutes remaining in regulation, the Hawks were awarded a corner kick. Catarina Medeiros curled her kick into the box, finding the head of Giulia Zanardi for the equalizer.

After regulation, the match went to a penalty shootout, but the Falcons were able to edge out the Hawks, 5-4.

It was the final match for a core of long-time Humber players Vanessa Fiore, Rebbecca Spratt, Giulia Zanardi, and Breanna Senfner.
