Humber Legend Marcelo Capozzolo Joins Women's Soccer Coaching Staff

ETOBICOKE – Humber women's soccer announced the hiring of alumnus Marcelo Capozzolo to the 2021 coaching staff. Capozzolo, who played for the men's program in 2004, then again in 2009 to 2013, will be coming home to join Jose Caro and Kat Conde on head coach Mauro Ongaro's staff.

"We are delighted and excited to bring Marcelo on to the coaching staff," Coach Ongaro said. "A proven leader and winner, he has transitioned his knowledge and passion of the game into becoming an exceptional coach. "

When Capozzolo donned the navy and gold during his playing days, he was an imposing presence on the pitch. He was a seven-time OCAA champion, winning four indoor and three outdoor soccer titles. In 2011, he was named a CCAA All-Canadian and the OCAA Player of the Year. The next season, he led the Hawks to their first national title in 11 seasons and was later inducted into the Humber Varsity Hall of Fame in 2014. He finished his career with a 56-8-4 (.853) record and was named to Humber's Top-50 Athletes list in 2017.

"It's an honour to be a coach at Humber," said Capozzolo. "I am happy to be back home. My main goal is to help bring a national championship to the women's program."

Capozzolo began his coaching career in 2016 with the Clarkson Soccer Club, coaching the U15-U18 boys and girls programs. He is also the owner and director of Northern Futbol Inc., a soccer academy with the main focus on player development.

"I'd like to thank Mike and Ray for the opportunity," added Capozzolo. "Also, the women's coaching staff and team for opening the doors for me and making me feel welcomed. My family has been extremely supportive and I'd like to thank my father for pushing me to become a coach and ultimately come back and coach at Humber."

Over the last decade, Humber soccer has captured eight OCAA medals, including three titles with an overall record of 100-22-9 (.798).

"We look forward to Marcelo's technical and tactical knowledge of the game, especially on the defensive end," added Ongaro. "His leadership skills and passion for the game will be invaluable to the future of the program."

Open tryouts for the women's soccer team begin August 17. Regular-season action begins September 17 against George Brown at Esther Shiner Stadium. Kick-off is set for 6:30 p.m.
