Rugby Sevens adds Scott Christian to coaching staff

ETOBICOKE – Two-time OCAA champion head coach Dale Essue has announced the addition of Scott Christian to his coaching staff. Christian will join J.C. Chuck as assistant for Coach Essue for the upcoming 2021 OCAA season.

"I am excited to have Scott join our coaching staff this year," said Coach Essue. "He brings a wealth of knowledge from a technical standpoint to the program, which comes from his background in coaching rugby and wrestling. He has a lot of enthusiasm and passion for rugby and I think that will translate well with the players and coaches."

Christian played rugby at Brampton Centennial Secondary and used his talents to become a varsity wrestler at Lakehead University where he captured three OUA bronze medals. His 2013 bronze medal match against Guelph in the 72 kg category can be watched here.

"Joining Humber's rich rugby history is a huge honour for me and something I have been looking forward to for a long time," said Christian. "Being able to work side by side with Dale and J.C. will be an incredible learning opportunity for me. I look forward to bringing my tough work ethic as an athlete and instill that drive into each of our athletes."

Christian has been coaching rugby and wrestling for almost a decade, leading the Turner Fenton S.S. Boys wrestling team to the OFSAA championship in 2019. He has also been with the Brampton Beavers Rugby Club since 2015.

"I would like to thank the Brampton Beavers Rugby Club for allowing me to grow as an athlete and as a coach over the last several years," Christian said.

Earlier this week, Christian and Chuck were also named to the 20-man roster for the Toronto Wolfpack. The Wolfpack are a professional team competing in the Super League out of Lamport Stadium.

"My goal is to see these athletes not only succeed on the field but in the classroom as well," added Christian. "Using that desire to succeed on the field and bringing it into their daily lives as they transition into their careers after college is a major focus for me."

Humber rugby sevens open the year with an exhibition match against St. Lawrence on Sept. 18, before kicking off the regular season on Oct. 2 at Seneca College.
