Women's Basketball eliminated from CCAA tournament after bronze semifinal loss

HAMILTON - Humber women's basketball was eliminated from the CCAA tournament after falling to the Red Deer Queens in the bronze semifinal round, 81-72. The Hawks finished the tournament with a 1-2 record, concluding the 2022-23 season with a 20-3 (.870) record.

Brittney English once again led the team in scoring, finishing with a team-high 21 points. Marley Bonnick finished with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Kayah Clarke and Sarah Baptie rounded out Humber's double-digit scorers, finishing with ten points each.

The Hawks once again found themselves behind the eight ball, starting another game slowly and allowing their opponents to jump out to a big lead. After the Queens jumped out a 10-5 lead in the first four minutes of action, Humber responded with a 7-2 run capped off by a Sydney Crawford corner three-pointer to tie the game at 12. Red Deer responded with a 12-2 run of their own before Kia Watt hit a running jumper at the buzzer to trim Red Deer's lead to four after 10 minutes of work, 22-18.

Forcing the Queens into early foul trouble, the Hawks were able to keep the game tight, as Teija Wareham, Kayah Clarke, and Brittney English combined to score 13 of Humber's 20 points in the second quarter. The Hawks held Red Deer to its worst shooting quarter of the game and went into the break trailing by two, 40-38.

As the third quarter began, Kia Watt found Nicole Chateau for a quick three-pointer, giving the Hawks their first lead of the game. Humber's lead only lasted 13 seconds, as a layup from Sadie Jeffries gave the lead back to Red Deer - a lead they would not relinquish for the rest of the game.

Sarah Baptie was named the player of the game for the Hawks, finishing ten points and five rebounds.
