Women's Basketball opens national tournament with big win over Vikings

HAMILTON – Humber women's basketball earned a spot in the CCAA semifinal round after cruising to a 21-point victory over the Augustana Vikings Wednesday afternoon, 84-63.

Senior Brittney English was brilliant for the Hawks, finishing with a game-high 23 points. All-Canadian Kia Watt added 22 points of her own, while Kayah Clarke recorded 19 points in just 18 minutes of action.

Continuing the trend from provincials, the Hawks once again started the game playing from behind. As a team, Humber was held to 22.2 percent shooting from the floor in the opening frame, recording just 12 points. Fortunately for the Hawks, their defence kept them in the game, holding the Vikings to 16 points on just 30.4 percent shooting.

It was the Brittney English show in the second quarter, as the senior went off for 11 points, shooting three-for-four from beyond the arc. The Hawks closed out the half on an 8-2 run, heading into the break with an 11-point lead, 38-29.

The Hawks came out of halftime on a 6-0 run, using two quick layups from Kia Watt to increase their lead to 17. Watt would finish with 11 points in the quarter, and the Hawks would finish the frame shooting 57.9 percent from the floor.

Humber's defence was too much for Augustana all game, holding the Vikings to 18 points or less each quarter. Nicole Chateau helped to keep Tayah Fiveland in check all game long. The Vikings' leading scorer finished with just six points in 32 minutes of action.

Marley Bonnick and Kayah Clarke combined to score 15 of Humber's 21 points in the final quarter, as Humber went on to win and earn a spot in the semifinal tomorrow, 84-63.
