2022 Season Preview: No. 13 Humber Women’s Basketball
ETOBICOKE – No. 13 Humber women's basketball will return to the hardwood for its 40th season, opening the OCAA on February 9 against Centennial. Tip-off is set for 6 pm and will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.
Fans will not be permitted to attend games for the first half of the season.
Scouting Centennial
- This will be the first meeting between these two programs since the 1991 OCAA season.
- The Colts have three players returning from the 2019-20 season and are led by first-year head coach Naomi Mullings.
- The Hawks are 3-7 all-time against the Colts, including 1-5 at home.
2019-20 Highlights
- The Hawks made a postseason appearance for the 30th consecutive season, defeating Algonquin to capture the OCAA bronze medal.
- Miea Campbell-Johnson was named a conference all-star for the second straight year, finishing with a career-high 266 points – tenth-most in program history.
- Kia Watt was named to the All-Rookie squad, averaging 13.9 points per game in her first season.
- Humber finished the season with a 17-1 record, capturing the sixth division title in the Coach Sharma era.
At the Helm
Ajay Sharma returns to the sidelines for his tenth season as the all-time winningest head coach in program history. Sharma has directed the Hawks to a period of unprecedented prosperity in the form of four CCAA tournament appearances – including the first national championship in program history – and four OCAA provincial titles. Sharma owns a 181-28 (.866) career record.
Aycha Hamaoui-Askarova (Seventh Year), Jeremy Alleyne (Fourth Year), and Aleena Domingo (First Year) will return for another season on Sharma's coaching staff.
Name Recognition
Miea Campbell-Johnson, Brittney English, and Kia Watt are the only returning players from Humber's 2019-20 squad.
Fresh Faces
Seven players will be donning the navy and gold for the first time this season:
- Nikki Ylagan, Guard, Mississauga – played four seasons with Lakehead University, scoring 907 points in 86 career games.
- Sapna Deo, Point Guard, Kelowna, B.C. – played two seasons with UBC-Okanagan, scoring 326 points in 33 career games.
- Danae Campana, Guard, Toronto – will be making her basketball debut after two seasons with Humber volleyball.
- Jasmin Onate, Guard, Mississauga – making postsecondary debut.
- Jillian Tulipano, Guard, Baden – making postsecondary debut.
- Sarah Baptie, Guard, Mississauga – making postsecondary debut.
- Danielle Romany, Point Guard, Brantford – making postsecondary debut.
2022 Schedule
- With the modified season schedule, Humber women's basketball has been added to the OCAA east division for the first time since 2007.
- The shortened nine-game season will see the Hawks host five home games – opening the season with a two-game stretch at the North Campus Gym.
- A new playoff format will have the high-seed host, with the divisional playoff beginning March 9.
Last Dance
Entering her final season, Miea Campbell-Johnson needs just 56 points to surpass Beth Latendresse for third all-time in scoring for Humber women's basketball. Already Humber's all-time blocks leader, the 2018 CCAA national champion also sits fourth with 463 rebounds.
