2022 Season Preview: No. 3 Humber Men’s Volleyball

ETOBICOKE – No. 3 Humber men's volleyball will return for its 38th season, opening the OCAA schedule on February 10 against Conestoga at the North Campus Gym. First serve is set for 8 pm and will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.

Fans will not be permitted to attend games for the first half of the season.

Scouting Conestoga
  • Humber is 21-0 all-time against Conestoga, dating back to the 2010 season.
  • The Condors have five returning players from last season.
  • Conestoga finished second in the west division during the 2019-20 season, earning a No. 10 ranking in the CCAA.
2019-20 Highlights
  • The Hawks made a postseason appearance for the 28th straight year, finishing the season 23-1, capturing the CCAA silver medal and the OCAA title.
  • Humber's regular-season two set losses were a new program-low.
  • Jake Gomes garnered numerous accolades for the Hawks, earning CCAA All-Canadian and OCAA Player of the Year awards.
  • Freshman phenom Joshua Fadare was named the OCAA Rookie of the Year after leading the team in kills and points per set.
  • Wayne Wilkins was named the National Coach of the Year for the second time in his career.
At the Helm

Head coach Wayne Wilkins returns for his 26th season, fresh off a 23-1 season. Coach Wilkins owns a 375-123 (.753) career record – which is tied for most all-time in Humber varsity history with his brother and women's volleyball coach, Chris Wilkins.

Assistant coach Hank Ma (22nd Season) and Mack Robertson (Seventh Season) return to the sidelines for Coach Wilkins' staff.

Ranked

The Hawks open the 2022 season as the third-ranked program in the country. Humber was the top-ranked team in the country during the 2019-20 season.

Fresh Faces

Six players will be donning the navy and gold for the first time this season:

  • Baufy Kongolo, Middle, Mississauga – making postsecondary debut.
  • York Sidorenko, Outside, Calgary – making postsecondary debut.
  • Adam Antolin, Right Side, Stoney Creek – making postsecondary debut.
  • Matheus Bahlis, Setter, Porto Alegre, Brazil – making postsecondary debut.
  • Alex Segui, Libero, Scarborough – making postsecondary debut.
  • Kyle Gray-Phillips, Outside, Brampton – making postsecondary debut.
2022 Schedule
  • The shortened nine-game season will see the Hawks host four home games – opening the season with a three-match stretch at the North Campus Gym.
  • A new playoff format will have the high-seed host, with the divisional playoff beginning March 9.
Record Book

Jake Gomes, Humber's all-time leader in assists, enters his fourth season needing 28 aces to surpass Humber legend Terrel Bramwell for most in program history.
