Luca Uccello headlines OCAA award winners

Humber men's soccer received the OCAA Player of the Year award, division title, divisional defensive team, divisional defensive player of the year award, and nine all-star selections.

VAUGHAN – Top-ranked Humber men's soccer garnered numerous league accolades Thursday afternoon when the league announced its yearly awards, which are determined by a polling of the conference's coaches.

Highlighting the award winners for Humber was fifth-year standout Luca Uccello, who became the eighth player in program history to be named the OCAA Player of Year. In the toughest division in OCAA soccer this season, Uccello made his presence felt in every match, leading the Hawks at both ends of the pitch. The Markham native set a new conference record with 12 assists, adding ten tallies in ten matches this season. Uccello was also named a first-team all-star for the second straight year.

Alex Meczarski, the former all-star for the Ryerson Rams, was named the defensive player of the year, leading Humber's backline that allowed a conference-low five tallies this season. The Richmond Hill native also scored two tallies in nine matches and was named a first-team all-star.

Joining Uccello and Meczarski on the first team was two-time CPL champion Kadell Thomas. The Brampton native finished second on the team in points, finishing the season with nine goals and six assists.

Captain Federico Leal was named a second-team all-star, earning a selection for the fifth time in his career. Keeper Holger Xhameta earned a second-team selection after leading the division with six wins this season. Damion Kaye, who finished fourth in the conference in scoring was named an all-star for the first time, along with Osman Hussein, Santino De Bartolo and rookie Isaiah Noel.

Top-ranked Humber will now set its sights on Fanshawe in the OCAA semifinal on Oct. 28. Kick-off is set for noon and will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.
