The Storyline

The No. 3 Humber men's basketball will begin its national championship pursuit Friday when the Capilano Blue (12-7, 2nd PACWEST) visit the North Campus Gym for the quarter-final game. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. and will be streamed live on the Hawks Sports Network.

Last Time Out

Humber returned to the OCAA mountaintop for the first time since 2016, defeating the St. Clair Saints in the conference finals, 87-70. A brilliant postseason run by Kevin Otoo saw the third-year guard earn championship MVP honours, while DeQuon Cascart and Frank Mitchell were named to the championship all-tournament team.

Scouting Capilano
  • The Blues will be making their third national appearance – the first since 2003.
  • After finishing the season in third place, the Blues came close to an upset in the PACWEST finals, falling to VIU, 81-78.
  • Tyrone Asenoguan led Capilano in scoring, averaging 16.2 points per game this season.
  • Capilano has one final four appearance, falling to Vanier in the 1984 bronze medal game, 78-73.
  • In the only meeting, Humber defeated Capilano in the 2003 bronze semifinal, 86-79. The Hawks would go on to defeat Algonquin for the national bronze medal.
Home Sweet Home

Humber is 3-0 all-time when hosting the national championship. The Hawks beat the Sheridan Bruins in the 2001 national final – joining NAIT as the only teams to win on home court.

The Best of the Best

Only the best player at Humber. To have your jersey honoured is the highest recognition anyone can receive in Humber Athletics. Only 28 student-athletes in Humber history have received this honour. At halftime on March 25, Humber will honour 2015 national champion Tyrone Dickson's jersey in a ceremony that will see his banner hung in the North Campus Gym amongst Humber's all-time best.

Jordan Year

This will be Humber's 23rd appearance at the national dance, with an all-time record of 47-24 (.662). Humber has reached the final four 17 times, capturing a national-best six CCAA gold medals.

Fast Start

The Hawks are 15-6 (.714) all-time in the quarter-final round.

Provincial Dominance

Led by Humber's six titles, the OCAA leads the way with 15 national championships. The PACWEST sits second with 12, while the RSEQ sits third with 10.

O My

The Coach O era has been off to a fast start with Humber entering the tournament with a 13-0 record. Coach Miles became just the fourth Humber bench boss to lead the Hawks to a provincial title in his first season.

Hardware

As the OCAA Player of the Year, DeQuon Cascart is in the running to become the first player in program history to earn national player of the year honours. Omar Miles is also a finalist for national coach of the year honours. The CCAA will announce award winners on March 24, and Cascart will receive his All-Canadian award before the game.
