Megan Balsdon Joins Curling Coaching Staff

ETOBICOKE – Head coach Sean Turriff has announced the hiring of Megan Balsdon to his coaching staff for the 2021-22 OCAA curling season, giving the program a highly-regarded athlete and a rising coach in the curling community.

The five-time Ontario Scotties Tournament of Hearts participant comes to Humber after four years in London, where she coached the Western Mustangs curling team from 2014 to 2018.

"I'm very excited that Megan will be joining the coaching staff at Humber," said Coach Turriff.  "Megan is brilliant and has both the credentials and experience to push our curling program to the next level."

Balsdon's playing resume is equally as impressive as her coaching experience. After capturing the Ontario Junior Championship in 2001, Balsdon's team went on to win the Canadian Junior Championship bronze medal. At the post-secondary level, she competed for the Western Mustangs, where she was named OUA first-team all-star and team most valuable player in 2011. That same season she was also named a CIS and OUA Academic All-Canadian.

"I'm thrilled to join Coach Turriff and the Humber curling program," said Balsdon. "As a former student-athlete, I'm looking to add some value to this already successful group of athletes and amazing varsity program."

As a curling instructor and coach, Balsdon's career has seen her travel the world, which includes three stints in Füssen, Germany as a junior camp instructor. She also coached Team Jill Mouzar to an Ontario Scotties second-place finish in 2013.

"She has a ton of experience coaching in the OUA and is an elite player in her own right," added Coach Turriff. "Having her influence and guidance for our athletes will be a powerful advantage."

A biomechanical engineer, Balsdon graduated from the University of Guelph in 2006 with a Bachelor of Engineering Science before earning her Master of Engineering Science for Western University in 2012.

"I'd like to thank Coach Turriff and Humber Athletics for this opportunity," added Balsdon. "I'm excited to join the Hawks family."

Tryouts for the 2021 curling squad will be invitation-only this season. Any full-time Humber or Guelph-Humber students interested in tryouts can find more information here.
