ETOBICOKE – Humber baseball (5-1, 1st OCAA) swept its home opener Friday night against the Sheridan Bruins (2-4, 7th OCAA). Hudson Lockwood led the way for the Hawks on offence, finishing the double header with three hits and four RBIs.

Game One: Humber 11, Sheridan 1 (5 innings)

After a quick first inning, Humber's offence got the bats going when rookie Caleb Eguren opened the scoring with a two-RBI single. Hudson Lockwood followed that up with a two-run single of his own, giving the Hawks an early 4-0 lead.

Humber's offence would stay hot in the third frame, adding five more runs while sending ten hitters to the plate. A couple of base hits and a few errors by the Sheridan Bruins resulted in the onslaught, with Jaykob Turner, Ryan Brodie, Justin Groves, and Eguren all collecting an RBI.

The Bruins would score their only run of the game in the fourth, drawing a walk with the bases loaded.

Lockwood would instil the mercy rule in the fifth inning after a two-run double, as the Hawks picked up their fifth win of the season. Maxim Skoropadsky picked up his first career win for Humber, throwing 3.2 innings and racking up six strikeouts.

Game Two: Humber 9, Sheridan 8

Another bases-loaded walk for Sheridan got the Bruins on the board in the first inning, but the Hawks would respond in the home half of the second. Giuseppe Sisca would cross home plate after a wild pitch, tying the game at one.

The Hawks would take the lead in the third when Hudson Lockwood scored on another wild pitch by the Bruins pitcher.

The Bruins were able to capitalize on some Humber mistakes and pushed across seven more runs in the fourth and fifth innings combined.

Aidan Murphy and the Hawks responded in the home half of the fifth, hitting an RBI double down the right field line. Sisca then followed with a two-run single that scored David Boatto and Murphy. Antonio Barberio trimmed the lead to one with a single that scored Fraser Trivett, and would end up scoring to tie the game on Sheridan's error.

After Dylan White led of the seventh with a ground rule double to left, the Bruins intentionally walked Eguren to set up a force at any base. Lockwood moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt, so the Bruins intentionally walked Boatto to load the bases and create a force play once again. Unfortunately for the Bruins, OCAA star of the week Aidan Murphy stepped up to the dish, crushing a line drive to left field field to win the game.

Rookie Ronan Hayes came on in relief to earn the victory, firing two scoreless innings without allowing a hit, while striking out five.
