ETOBICOKE – When Humber varsity returns to competition this fall for the first time in 18 months, they'll do so with the added protection of being fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

Humber College announced on August 3 that all student-athletes on a varsity team must be fully vaccinated in order to compete in the 2021-22 season.

"With the return of varsity athletics, we wanted to ensure the safety of our student-athletes, coaches, support staff, and fans," said Ray Chateau, Director of Athletics and Recreation. "The vaccination requirement is an important part of that effort, as we strive to get back to delivering an exceptional student-athlete experience."

All student-athletes will be required to be fully vaccinated by September 16, 2021.

Individuals who do not establish that they have met this requirement and who have not been granted an exemption by the scheduled date will not be permitted to attend practice, travel or participate in competitive play.

Humber will only recognize vaccines that are approved for use in Canada and endorsed by the World Health Organization. Requests for accommodations on human rights grounds such as medical conditions or religious beliefs will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis.

"What we're trying to do is create as safe an environment for our student-athletes as possible," added Chateau. "We want to ensure the health and safety of our student-athletes and the best way to mitigate the risk is to be fully vaccinated."

Students who are not yet vaccinated are encouraged to take advantage of one of the walk-in clinics now available or book online through the provincial booking system.
