Humber Student-Athletes Set GPA Record for Winter Semester

ETOBICOKE – Humber Varsity posted its highest semester grade point average in program history, finishing the winter semester with a 78 per cent overall mark. A remarkable 154 student-athletes, or 81.1 per cent, earned a 70 average or better, while 21 individuals earned a 90 or higher. All fourteen programs earned a cumulative average of 70 or better for the first time in Humber history, while nine teams finished with a 75 or better.

"The past few semesters have provided unprecedented challenges to our student-athletes, and their performance in the classroom is indicative of their commitment," said Director of Athletics Ray Chateau. "The academic support of our student-athletes is critical, and our coaches and staff continue to place high value on the educational experience."

The Varsity Academic Centre, led by Mallory Lawton, has played a significant role in the success of Humber's student-athletes. Over the last four semesters, the Hawks have recorded an unprecedented 75.4 per cent cumulative GPA, highlighted by the Curling program's impressive 81.4 mark.

"Clearly these numbers illustrate a tremendous winter semester by our Humber student-athletes in the classroom. They certainly have something to be proud of and have shown an incredible display of resilience and dedication these last few months," Mallory Lawton said. "Having their seasons end abruptly and moving to online learning provided unique challenges, but our student-athletes displayed their true character and ability to cope and persevere through unprecedented times."

Humber also set a new program record with 101 student-athletes finishing the semester on the honour roll. Of the 190 student-athletes included in the latest grade report, 53 per cent finished with an 80 or higher, surpassing the previous record of 45 per cent from the 2020 fall semester. Prior to the 2020-21 academic year, the previous record 32 per cent.

"I'd like to thank Mallory for her determination to keep our students motivated and accountable during this shift to online learning," added Chateau. "She was tremendously dedicated and attentive to our student-athlete needs and went above and beyond to ensure their success."
