Where Are They Now - Meagan Tocher

ETOBICOKE – Former ultimate Frisbee player and Student Athletic Therapist, Meagan Tocher, is continuing her pursuit of higher education and experiential learning overseas.

While working toward her undergraduate degree in Kinesiology at the University of Guelph-Humber, Tocher was a member of Humber’s extramural ultimate Frisbee team, as well as a participant in the intramural volleyball league.  She was able to balance her academic requirements and extracurricular activities while learning about the importance of time management and camaraderie in both areas.  She was able to build lasting relationships and leadership skills during her three years of play and encourages current students to “get involved in any way that you feel comfortable, because you’re guaranteed to meet some great people.”

For her efforts on the Frisbee field, Tocher was named the team’s most valuable player in 2013 after making a tremendous catch in the dying seconds of a hard fought championship match.  A year later, the ultimate Frisbee team was named extramural team of the year at the spring banquet, and Tocher was presented with the Humber Campus Recreation Award of Distinction for her dedication to growing the game.  The ultimate Frisbee program now sees approximately fifty hopefuls at fall tryouts, has an experienced coach and participates in more events per season.

Upon graduation from Guelph-Humber, Tocher decided to continue her education in Athletic Therapy at Sheridan College.  She had been introduced to the field of Athletic Therapy while participating in the ultimate Frisbee program at Humber, and decided to pursue it as a career.  During the 2014-2015 season, Tocher returned home to Humber as a Student Athletic Therapist, completing an experiential learning placement for her program.  She worked with the student athletes from the men’s and women’s hockey teams at the north campus, providing first-aid, ensuring safe play and return to play as well as providing strength and conditioning tips. She completed her program in 2017, and began working as an Athletic Therapist.

Currently, Tocher is enrolled at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where she is pursuing a Master of Science Degree in Performance Psychology.  She plans to continue to work as an Athletic Therapist and as a Performance Coach with the ability to provide high performance athletes with a holistic approach to rehabilitation and injury prevention.

Tocher has had the opportunity to travel, for both leisure and for work, to 23 countries across North America, Central America and Europe.  She continues to play ultimate Frisbee during the summer months, with some of her former teammates from Humber, and has tried many other sports at the recreational level.  She hopes to soon return home to Toronto and spend some quality time with her sisters and continues to encourage others to “enjoy every minute.”
