ETOBICOKE – Erin Das, former extramural women’s hockey captain, is connecting with youth in Kenya through community based hockey programs.  

Das completed her Bachelor of Nursing degree at Humber as part of the UNB-Humber collaborative program in 2008.  During her four years as a student, Das was an integral member of the women’s extramural hockey team, under the leadership of Jim Bialek.

 Das lead the team to a number of tournament wins, and happily welcomed and mentored new players to the program. “Erin was as big off the ice as she was on. She was always such a positive leader for women in sport, especially hockey, where she excelled,” said Bialek.  In recognition of her many lasting contributions to the program, Das was presented with the Campus Recreation Award of Distinction at the annual spring banquet in 2008.

 In 2009, the Markham, Ontario native returned to the women’s extramural hockey team as a coach.  In her short time at the helm, Das was able to use her experience as a player to build positive relationships with team members and guided them through various levels of skill development and game strategy.  She also focused on the importance of fair play and inclusion.

 After her marriage to Humber Industrial Design graduate, Nishant Das, she began working in her field as a Palliative Care Nurse.  The newlyweds then embarked on a worldwide journey that has included stops in at least 8 countries and also expanded their family by welcoming 3 sons. 

 With the goal of continuing to inspire youth, including her own children, to get involved in their community, Das continues to lend her time to teaching Sunday school at her church, and running youth hockey programs for the Kenya Ice Lions Hockey Club which has previously been featured on Sportsnet, CBC and ESPN.
