Where Are They Now - Caroline Podpora

Etobicoke - Caroline Podpora is a recent graduate of the Early Childhood Education program at the University of Guelph-Humber.  During her time on campus she participated in the extramural volleyball program and worked in the Humber Athletics Department, paving the way for her participation in a number of experiential learning opportunities.

The Toronto native joined the extramural volleyball team in her first year of studies, and represented Humber’s team on the court for four seasons.  She was able to make fast friends with teammates and was able to interact with students from campuses across the province, increasing her social circle and connectedness to the campus.  Her commitment to the program allowed her to grow and develop as an athlete and as a person, something that she very is proud of.

In her final year of extramural volleyball play, Podpora was named the program’s Most Improved Player by the coaching staff and was presented with a commemorative certificate at the year-end banquet.  She was also presented with the Jim Bialek Award of Distinction for her commitment and dedication to the growth and continuity of the extramural volleyball program, which is the highest honour in Humber Recreation’s awards system.

The learning experience gained on the court transitioned into an on-campus work opportunity for Podpora, joining the Campus Recreation Team.  In her final year of studies, she worked part time as an Intramural Official and Office Assistant where she was able to gain experience in planning and organizing programs and activities, game operations and officiating, office administration, problem solving and effective communication – skills transferrable to a number of careers.

Upon graduation from her program in 2019, Podpora enrolled at York University, pursuing a Bachelor of Education Degree, and is looking forward to graduating this year.  She has continued to play volleyball, and keeps in touch with teammates and coworkers.  She has also enjoyed traveling to Poland, Spain and Portugal.  In the future, she hopes to be working as a teacher as well as adding some more travel stamps to her passport.
