Men's Hockey Captures Georgian Super Cup Championship

BARRIE - On the 8th anniversary of Humber Men’s Hockey’s OCCCR Provincial Challenge Cup win, the current team was on the ice to try to bring home some additional hardware as they suited up for their final Ontario Collegiate Recreation tournament of the season hosted by Georgian College.

The day started with a matchup against Trent University.  Humber was able to skate passed their opponent with a 4-1 win with goals by first year defensemen, Caleb Eggert and Marcello Modugno, forward Cody Sobala, and alternate captain, Michael McCullough.  Goaltender, Anthony Charbonneau, in his first appearance for the Hawks this season, held Trent to just one goal, and also earning himself the player of the game nod.

In the second game, the Hawks would face a familiar opponent in the squad from McMaster University.  Humber opened the scoring in the first period with 2 quick goals and carried a 2-0 lead into the second frame.  McMaster would score first in the second period, cutting the Hawks’ lead in half temporarily.  Sobala would score the next two goals in the game, putting Humber’s team up 3-1, and earning himself the coveted player of the game jersey.  The contest ended with a score of 4-2 with a late goal scored by McMaster.

With 2 wins, and earning a full 6 points in preliminary play, the Hawks were ranked in first place heading into the playoff round, and were granted a bye into the semi-finals to play the fourth-place team.

The semi-final matchup would, once again, see the Hawks facing their rivals from McMaster.  Veteran Captain, Andreas Vena, opened the scoring for the Hawks early in the first period.  In the second period, first year forward, Daniel Ruocco, and veteran forward, Justin Eccleston netted goals, as well as McCullough adding another.  Ruocco would score again in the third period to give the Hawks a 5-0 win.  Charbonneau posted the shutout and forward, Manny Sigal, was named the player of the game.

In their 4th and final game of the day, the Hawks were scheduled to face another familiar squad in the Coyotes from La Cite.  The teams traded chances and amazing goalie saves during the first period, and for most of the second period.  With time winding down in the second period, rookie forward, Panos Tsementzis netted the opening goal of the game.  In the third period, Humber would add 2 more goals from Ruocco and McCullough, and hold the Coyotes off the scoresheet to win the game 3-0.  First-year goaltender, Liam Oakley posted the team’s second shutout of the day, also earning him the player of the game award, and helping to solidify the Humber Hawks as the Georgian Super Cup Champions.
