Humber Extramural Hockey Athletes Honoured at Annual Banquet

Humber’s extramural hockey athletes were honoured at the annual banquet and dinner, this year held at Westwood Arena.

The men’s and women’s hockey teams posted successful seasons, regardless of playing under a number of restrictions stemming from the pandemic.  The teams were each selected from open tryouts in the fall, where more than 80 students were vying for a spot on the respective teams.  Both rosters remained fluid throughout the season with more than 45 different players moving in and out of each game or tournament lineup.

In tournament play, the Hawks were eliminated in the semi-finals of their home tournament, but finished second at the La Cite event and won the Georgian College Super Cup.  Humber’s goalies posted 4 shutouts in tournament play.  In the lone skills competition held this year, Nathan Grosso was named as the fastest skater and Daniel Ruocco won the accuracy shooting contest.

Team Awards:

Most Valuable Player – Michael McCullough

Rookie of the Year – Cody Sobala

Coaches’ Pick – Nathan Grosso

Sportsmanship – Ben Keogan

Award of Distinction – Andreas Vena

Coach of the Year – Dave Eccleston

Fair Play Team of the Year

On the women’s side, the Hawks participated in three tournaments and brought home the championship at La Cite and Humber, going undefeated in both events, and finished in second place at the Georgian College Super Cup.  The team record of 8-2 is one of the best in team history.  Humber’s goalies combined for 8 shutouts and only allowed 2 goals past them all season.  In the skills competition, Rebecca Beck was named as the fastest skater while Ella McCullough won the accuracy shooting challenge and Rachel Zmigrodzki was the top goalie.

Team Awards:

Most Valuable Player – Elyse Seravalle

Rookie of the Year – Noy Ravid

Coaches’ Pick – Charlotte Exell

Both teams will look to build on their successes next year when the Ontario Collegiate Recreation RecSeries and RecCup events return.
