ETOBICOKE – Humber women's volleyball falls to a 2-2 on the season after coming up short in a four-set battle against No.4 Fanshawe Falcons on Nov 15. The Hawks snapped Fanshawe's 16-set win streak, with the final set scores of 13-25, 25-16, 29-31, and 19-25.
The Hawks were unable to find their footing in the first set, as Fanshawe earned the first three points of the match, which quickly escalated to a 7-1 lead. Head coach Chris Wilkins took an early time out for Humber as his team continued to struggle to find court on their offensive tries. Fanshawe began to slip away, with a service run that led their team to a solidifying 21-7 advantage. Humber refused to give away the set easily, earning six more points before the Falcons finalized the score, 25-13.
The Hawks seemed to have completely shaken off their previous set, as they entered the second set fired up and ready to make a comeback. Alex Krstonosic certified an 8-4 lead for her team after a six-point service run which was extended by a block and kill by Julia Watson, giving Humber a six-point lead. Oliva Foley shifted the momentum within the building as she earned back-to-back kills for the Hawks, and Alex Bartmann finalized the second set with an ace to win, 25-16.
Humber carried their energy into the final sets, giving the Fanshawe Falcons no room to get comfortable on the court. Tension began to rise as both teams were tied with a set each. Huge blocks by Alex Krstonosic and Alex Bartman maintained Humber's control of the Falcon's offence as the lead began to sway between teams. Both teams remained within a few points of one another, working hard to stop any service runs. The crowd was on the edge of their seats as the battling birds raced neck-to-neck up the scoreboard, leaving no room for mistakes on either side. Humber remained disciplined throughout the intensity of the sets but fell behind in the final moments of the game, falling short by 31-29 in the third set and 25-19 in the fourth.
Fourth-year starter Julia Watson led the Hawks with 14 kills and three blocks, while second-year middle Alex Krstonosic followed directly behind with 11 kills, two blocks and an ace.
Humber Highlights
- Setter Alex Bartmann has placed another 42 assists under her belt, making her new career total 747, and placing her just 26 away from placing a new record in program history.
- Adding 6 additional blocks to their team statistics, the Hawks continue to lead the league with an average of 2.75 blocks per set.
- Second-year Olivia Foley rolled out her best game of the season so far, earning 10 kills and maintaining a .444 hitting percentage
