SUDBURY, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team were looking to bounce back after their first loss in OCAA Playoff play in twelve years on Sunday in the 2019 OCAA Bronze Medal game against the East Division champion Durham Lords. Falling way behind in the first two sets paved the way for a 3-0 (19-25, 21-25, 25-11, 18-25) Lords victory.
Give the Hawks credit for making up ground in each lost set, but the deficits were too much to overcome.
The first set saw Humber trail 22-8, but the Hawks rebounded to win 11 of the next 13 points. It was a great run, but with Durham only needing a couple of side-outs, the outcome was already decided.
The second set was somewhat similar, but Humber did rally to tie the set at 17 after being down as many as five points. Durham took over and comfortably rolled to the four point set win.
The third set was the only blip on the day, with the Hawks rallying in the third set, holding a lead at the five point mark. They built on that lead and were in control as the set hit double digits, and did not look back in dominating on their way to a 25-11 set win.
The fourth and final set showed flashes of the first two, as Humber fought to get into a 6-6 tie, only to give up a run of four to fall behind considerably once again and being forced to play from behind.
Midway through the set, the Hawks had battled back to a 14-12 lead by taking eight of the next nine points. Cue the Lords seven point run, and the Hawks found themselves in yet another hole at 20-15. Unable to rally late, the Hawks fell 25-18 in the set and 3-1 in the match.
Outside hitter Julia Watson was selected as Humber's Player of the Game, and setter Alex Bartman was chosen as a tournament All-Star.
This is the first time since the 2000-01 season that the Hawks did not sit upon the podium and only the second time in the last 23 years. In that time, Humber won 15 OCAA crowns.
