WELLAND, ON: The Humber Hawks won in three straight sets (25-22, 25-14, 25-22) over Niagara on Thursday night, with every set being decided in unique ways. With the win, the Hawks see thier record improve to 6-2, while the Knights drop to 5-3.
Alex Bartman got the Hawks fired up in the opening set against the Knights as she went onto a five-point serving run, nailing down three aces in a row. After this, the scores evened out and both teams battled back and forth for the lead. The Knights were biting at the Hawks feet as they neared the end of the set. After a swift attack by Humber's Alex Krstonosic, the set ended 25-22 in the Hawks favour.
The Hawks came out flying in the second set as they quickly took, and ran with the lead. Humber's Sally Nguyen doubled Niagara's score of 8 as she went on a six-point serving run. This forced the Knights to call a timeout at 8-16. Re-approaching the service line, Sally Nguyen nailed another two serves down before her run ended. The Knights seemed unable to recover from their deficit as the Hawks continued to build on their lead. As in the first set, Hawks middle Alex Krstonosic closed off the second set with a quick kill out of the middle, closing the set out at 25-14.
The Hawks had a slower start to the third set as they quickly gave away a four-point lead. Attacking from behind, Humber pushed to gain a lead. Yet they stayed just a point behind for the majority of the set. Humber started to find a flow to their gameplay within the last points of the game, pulling the lead from under Niagara's feet. The Knights worked to stop this as they called a fast timeout at 21-19. Humber stayed disciplined though, not letting Niagara creep in from behind. Emma Heeney ended off the game with a huge outside kill, securing Humber the 25-22 set win.
Julia Watson and Alex Krstonosic led the Hawks with 7 kills each, while setter Alex Bartman earned 2 kills, 22 assists 6 aces. Kyla Wilkins added 17 digs onto her spreadsheet, bringing her total career number to 518.

The Hawks will welcome the Conestoga Condors on home court December 6th, at 6:00pm. This will be the last OCAA match of the 2018 fall season.
