SAULT STE. MARIE— No. 3 Humber women's basketball kicked off their weekend doubleheader against the Sault Cougars (0-9, 9th West) winning, 96-46, Saturday afternoon.
Jahnae Gyles led the way offensively for Humber, finishing with a game-high 26 points on 10-of-20 shooting from the floor. The fifth-year guard finished just shy of a triple-double, recording a career-high eight assists, along with nine rebounds and five steals in the win.
Humber's offence came out strong in the opening quarter as they doubled upped the host Cougars scoring 30 points while shooting 10-for-21 (47.6 percent) from the field. Fourth-year forward Miea Campbell-Johnson was terrific on the offensive end going a perfect three-for-three from the field while scoring ten points in the quarter.
The Hawks continued to assert themselves on the offensive end in the second shooting 52.6 percent in the quarter as their lead grew. Gyles was all over the court in the second recording six points, four steals, three assists, and a rebound, as her team went into the half up, 52-27.
The second half proved to be a formality as Humber's pace wore down the Cougars by the start of the fourth. The Cougars went without a point for the first five minutes of the quarter as Humber locked in on defence. In the end, Humber ran away with this one easily picking up their ninth straight win to start the season by a score of 96-46.
The Hawks had three other players score in double-figures in the win, as Campbell-Johnson finished the game with 20 points to go along with nine rebounds. Brittney English and Kia Watt rounded out the double-digit scorers for Humber finishing with 15 and 12 points, respectively.
Teresa Da Silva had her best performance as a Hawk, as the Etobicoke native recorded three career-highs in the game with seven points, two three-pointers and six rebounds in 13 minutes of action.
