ETOBICOKE, Ont – Top-ranked Humber women's basketball (14-0, 1st West) finished their three-game homestand with another definitive victory, defeating the Sheridan Bruins (7-6, 6th West) 104-62 in front of a packed crowd Thursday evening.
After both teams went scoreless for nearly three minutes to open the game, Aleena Domingo struck first for the Hawks, opening the floodgates as Humber soon took a 17-2 lead. While the Bruins fought back to lessen this deficit, soon cutting Humber's lead down to 11, the Hawks finished the first strong, finishing the first a 29-11 lead. Domingo had an especially solid first quarter, going 5 of 5 from the field for 10 points and pacing the Hawks field goal shooting to 54.2 percent (13-of-24).
The Hawks' explosive offence returned in the second quarter, scoring 19 points within the first five minutes and taking a 29-point lead. While the pace of the game would cool in the remainder of the second, the Hawks still outscored the Bruins by nine points and maintained their 29-point lead overall. Humber finished the half at 46.7 percent (21-of-45) shooting from the field, (46.7%) versus Sheridan's 29.7 percent (11-of-37).
The pace of the game took a turn in the third as the Bruins, led by Brianna Stewart, took charge. Scoring more in the third than in the entire first half, the Bruins outscored the Hawks by seven and narrowed their deficit to 22 points. Stewart had 11 points in the quarter as Sheridan converted 50 percent (10-of-20) of their field goal attempts and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) of their three-pointers. Both Ceejay Nofuente and Miea Campbell-Johnson scored eight points in the third for the Hawks.
Any fears from Hawks fans of a Bruins comeback were put to bed in the fourth as Humber retook control of the game. Outscoring their opponents 17-3 early in the fourth, the Hawks would ultimately turn in their best quarter of the game, scoring 31 points and handily claiming victory 104-62. Jahnae Gyles would cap off the Hawk's win, scoring 12 points in the final quarter and shooting 80 percent from the field.
Five Hawks players scored over 10 points in the game, led by 21 points from Domingo, who also had 13 rebounds for her sixth double-double of the season. Domingo was named the Hawks Nation Player of the Game after the victory.
Nofuente, with 16 points and ten assists, also recorded a double-double for Humber. Gyles, Campbell-Johnson and Makeba Taylor recorded 17, 13, and 10 points, respectively. Domingo led the team in steals with three, and Laura Meadows had three blocks.
Stewart led the Bruins with 21 points and six rebounds. Sydney Charvis had 16 points for Sheridan, including four three-pointers on six attempts.
