KITCHENER, Ont -- Humber women's basketball opens the 2017 OCAA season Sunday afternoon, taking on Conestoga at 1 p.m.
The Storyline
The Hawks concluded its 2016-17 season with a 24-1 record, winning the programs second straight CCAA medal. After dropping the opening game of the national championship tournament – snapping its win streak at 45 consecutive games – Humber won three straight to claim the CCAA bronze medal.
In OCAA play, Humber won its third straight provincial title and enters this season with the second longest win streak in conference history.
What to Watch For
- The Hawks look to return to the top of the OCAA West Division after making an appearance in the postseason for 14 straight seasons. Humber returns nine players, including 2016-17 All-Stars Aleena Domingo and Ceejay Nofuente, and welcomes six new faces to the 2017-18 squad.
- Ceejay Nofuente led Humber a year ago in scoring (394), assists (124), rebounds (139), and steals (101) and was named the CCAA Player of the Year for the second straight season. She established new OCAA single-game records with 55 points and 13 three-pointers in a win over Redeemer.
- Nofuente and Aleena Domingo enter the new season sitting atop Humber's all-time scoring list, sitting with 905 and 806 points, respectively.
- Ajay Sharma returns to the sidelines for his seventh season and is 17 wins from tying Humber Hall of Famer Jim Henderson (1991 – 2000) as the all-time winningest head coach in program history. Sharma has directed the Hawks to a period of unprecedented prosperity in the form of three consecutive CCAA tournament appearances – including the first national championship in program history – and three straight provincial titles. Sharma owns a 116-22 career record.

All-Canadian Ceejay Nofuente sits 95 points away from becoming the first Humber women's basketball player to score 1,000 career points.
Chasing History
Sitting at 58 straight wins, only Algonquin – 67 straight from Nov. 5, 2011, to Jan. 15, 2015 – has put together a longer win streak in OCAA history than Humber.
The Hawks have won three-straight OCAA titles from 2014-16, one away from joining Algonquin who won four-straight from 2011-15.
