HAWKS FINISH FIRST HALF WITH 3-0 WIN OVER CONESTOGA

Recap by Aideena Wickstrom

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks (8-1, 2nd West) knocked off a solid Conestoga College team (5-4, 4th West) in three straight (25-23, 25-21, 25-19) sets on Thursday night in the Hawks last match of the first half.

Humber had a rough start to their opening set. Making multiple serving errors within the first 15 points, the Hawks practically handed the Condors a four point lead. This lead carried on and extended for the majority of the first set. Now 17-10 for the Condors, Humber was quickly falling further and further behind. Determined to take the set though, the Hawks seemed to finally find their groove. As Andrew Blakey and Jake Gomes set up a huge block towards the opposing team's left side, the Condors became more complacent. Rrezart Sadiku made the Condors more uneasy as he flew out of the outside position with a wild kill. As Humber began to go on a roll, the Condors seemed to allow the Hawks to catch up. With a wild 22-22 come back from Humber, the bench and crowd were ecstatic. As they stayed disciplined until the final points, Humber came from beneath and shoved their way into a 25-23 win.

Set two was similar to the first in that the Hawks gave the Condors an early lead. This time though, the Hawks regained their footing before the Condors flew too far out of their reach. Tying the game up at 10-10, Humber began to take control of the game. As they continued to earn point after point, the Hawks forced Conestoga into a time out at 15-11. Returning onto the court, the Hawks remained aggressive at the net, restraining the Condors from earning points. Now 17-12, the visiting Condors dug themselves into an unreturnable deficit. Once the Hawks reached the 20 point checkmark, Conestoga called their final timeout of the set. Rafael Hilario and Rrezart Sadiku ended off the game with two major kills from both sides of the court. The final score was 25-21.

Unlike the first two sets, the Humber Hawks managed to take an early 6-3 lead in the third set. Jake Gomes pushed this lead further as he hit the service line and extended the point spread between the teams to 11-7. The Condors called a fast time out to try and regroup before digging themselves a hole. After the break, the Condors were still unable to play to the level that they did in the previous two sets. Humber was in a 16-13 lead when John Obie hit the service line and carried the Hawks over the landmark of 20 points. Still under 15, the Condors began to break apart defensively. The Conestoga head coach, Wayne Harris, called a late timeout at 22-19 to try and push the game to a fourth set. Conestoga fell short of this goal though, as the Hawks continued to nail balls into their court. John Obie finished off the final set with a huge middle block, ending the game 25-20.

The lead scorers were Kamyn Wilkins and Rafael Hilario, with 10 and 14 kills each. The Hawks Nation player of the game was setter Jake Gomes, who earned Humber College 34 assists, 3 aces, and 5 digs.
