MARCOS NUNES NAMED THE OCAA MEN’S SOCCER PLAYER OF THE YEAR
ANCASTER, ON: Humber Hawks star striker Marcos Nunes was named the 2016 OCAA Player of the Year and All Canadian at a presentation that took place at the OCAA Men's Soccer Awards banquet on Thursday morning, held at the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel. He was also honoured as a Central Division All Star.
With his selection as the OCAA player of the year, his name has been forwarded to the CCAA selection committee for consideration for the CCAA National Player of the Year award. This announcement will take place in two weeks, at the CCAA Men's Soccer Championship Awards banquet at Keyano College in Fort MacMurray, Alberta.
Marcos, quite remarkably given the players who have worn the colours of the Humber Hawks over the years, may be the best offensive and overall impactful player in Hawk history.
Prior to his selection as the 2016 OCAA Men's Soccer Player of the Year, he has been a two-time CCAA National champion, a CCAA All Star in his first year and the CCAA championship MVP in his next. Although he is listed in his fourth year of eligibility, this is indeed his third year of college play, and he has won provincial and national gold in every year.
This year he has been the "go-to" player on the team that has held the CCAA and OCAA number one spot in the rankings since day one. In the nine games played, he has scored a league leading 10 goals, with almost everyone being of the spectacular variety. The OCAA does not count assists, but if they did it would be clear that Marcos has accounted for a hand in over fifty percent of the teams goals.
He is gentlemanly on the field, garnering only a single yellow card the entire season, and that was just for supporting a fallen teammate. He has not been carded for any in-play discipline.
Perhaps the biggest value Marcos brings to a team presents itself in the play-offs. He has a way to elevate his game, and has consistently been the leader on the pitch in these games by scoring big goals in big situations.
Marcos has had a vast array of experiences as a soccer athlete, one that has brought him across the country and into Europe as well. He actively shares these experiences with teammates and soccer enthusiasts in the area, in hopes of growing the game and the athletes that play the game.
