Humber Golf Heading to Canadian University/College Championship

KOMOKA, Ont – The Humber men's golf team is heading to Komoka to compete in the 17th annual Canadian University/College Championship, May 28-31 at FireRock Golf Club. The event is Canada's most prestigious post-secondary golf championship, as it brings together the top teams from a variety of university and collegiate leagues from coast to coast.

The Hawks enter the 17-team tournament having played at FireRock twice during the 2018-19 golf season. Humber opened the year with a tie for first at the Fanshawe Invitational, led by a two-under par from Conner Watt. At the provincial championship, Cameron Griffin led Humber to its 21st OCAA team title, finishing six-over par for the individual silver medal. The Hawks beat the field by four strokes, shooting 31-over par (297, 296, 290 - 883).

Last Time Out
Humber finished second (309, +21) at the annual NCAA Gannon Spring Invitational. Teammates Conner Watt, Michael Vance and Luke McLean finished tied for eighth place shooting five-over par, while All-Canadian Cameron Griffin finished with a 78.

Last Year
At Chilliwack Golf Club in British Columbia, Humber finished in a tie for fourth place (1157, +5). The Hawks were the only OCAA program to make the cut and finished 14 strokes behind the Victoria Vikes for second place.

Humber's low-round of 281 on Day Three left the Hawks within striking distance for a top-two finish.

The University of Fraser Valley took the team crown with a score of 1,126 and also claimed the top individual spot, with Daniel Campbell shooting a four-round total of 277 (-11).

The Course
Framed by natural grasses and trees, captivating landforms and ragged handmade bunkers, FireRock is a stunning course that flows effortlessly over pastureland, across environmentally significant Savannah grasses and the Oxbow River valley, intertwining with existing gravel spoil piles.

The challenging par-72 championship design measures 6,676-yards from the Gold tees and stretches back to a very demanding 7,183-yards from the tips.

Tournament History
Under the guidance of head coach Ray Chateau, the men's program captured the 2004 Canadian University/College Championship at the Wyldewood Golf Club in Hornby, Ont. Brad Kerfoot captured the individual gold medal for Humber.

In 2007, the team comprised of Lee French, Mike Zizek, Ryan Willoughby, James Castle, and Matt Sloan would shoot four consecutive rounds under par (286, 287, 277, 284) and won the tournament with a record score of 18-under par.

Again in 2011, the Hawks went on to capture the team title, winning by 18 shots over the University of British Columbia.

Maggie Trainor captured the women's individual title in 2009, becoming the first OCAA student-athlete to complete the feat.
