ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks men's baseball team (17-3, 1st place) swept their season ending doubleheader at Connorvale Park, with 9-1 and 14-0 wins over the Seneca Sting (3-17, 6th place). With the two wins, Humber completes their best regular season record, and becomes the only team other than St. Clair to win the league pennant. Also of note, Humber finished the season with 11 straight wins.
Individual accomplishments of note on the mound and at the plate included marks set by pitcher Rory Pollard and Outfielder Andrew Thomson. Pollard was the league's ERA leader with an incredible mark of 0.32, as surrendered just a single earned run in 22 innings on his way to a 3-0 record. Thomson rallied over the past few games, and ended the season as the OCAA batting champion with a .422 average. Andrew went 3 for 6 in the doubleheader.
GAME 1
Humber 9 vs Seneca 1
The final score was not entirely indicative of how this game went. True, it was the Hawks who ran out to a quick 3-0 win after their first at-bat, but the Seneca hurler kept the Hawks in check as his team brought the score to just a two-run deficit heading into the bottom of the sixth. It was here that Humber exploded and salted away the game, pushing across six runs against the tiring Sting ace.
Credit Keegan Murphy, as he was responsible for most of what took place. Not only did he triple and score to lead off the inning, he came to bat a second time and stood on first base after a base on balls.
Rory Pollard started, but based on the coaches plan for these last two games, pitched only the first two innings. Steven Hough pitched the next two, and was credited with the win. Cam Hibbs pitched a scoreless fifth, and Matt Stoddart who came in with the score 3-1 recorded the save.
Fiver Humber players had two hits each, in the Hawks 13 hit attack. Seneca recorded four hits in the game, with no one getting two.
Keegan Murphy was selected as the Hawk Nation Player of the Game.
GAME 2
Humber 14 vs Seneca 0 (5 innings)
This game was all but over in the second inning, as Humber piled on eight runs after scoring one in the first. After a five run fourth, the Hawks just needed three outs to finish the game via the mercy rule after four and a half innings.
Braden Taylor pitched the first three, and saw his league second best ERA drop to 1.03. With Taylor only pitching three innings, his successor Brendan Lyons got credit for the win.
Three Hawks had two hits on the game, with the team knocking out 14 hits in just four innings. Keegan Murphy led the way with three RBI's.
Jared Gonsalves, who had two hits in the second game and four hits in both games, was named the Hawk Nation Player of the Game.
WHAT'S NEXT
Humber will compete for the 2018 OCAA league championship next Friday and Saturday at Kinsmen Park in Oshawa. They will open against the Fanshawe Falcons, but a game time has yet to be confirmed.
