HAWKS SOAR TO START SECOND HALF WITH 3-0 SWEEP OF SHERIDAN

Recap by Aideena Wickstrom

ETOBICOKE, ON: On January 10th, the Humber Hawks Women's volleyball team hosted the first OCAA game of 2019. In this match, they welcomed the Sheridan Bruins, who they toppled over in three straight sets. (25-18, 25-16, 25-12)

Olivia Foley set the pace for the Hawks gameplay on the service line, as she quickly lurched the Hawks into a three point lead above the Bruins. This lead continued to extend as Humber began executing their offence efficiently and aggressively. Julia Watson hit the service line and nailed down three serves, before the Bruins Head Coach saw enough, and called a timeout. Coming back onto the court, Julia Watson continued to widen her serving run, nailing down another four serves before being stopped. Now 16-6, the Bruins began to regain some energy. Placing two huge blocks at the net, Sheridan had temporarily stopped Humber from scoring. This all changed once Alex Krstonosic reached the front row again, as she nailed down another two kills, and silenced the opposing team's bench. The Bruins pushed near the end, but lost the match to a missed serve. The final score was 25-18 in favor of the Hawks.

Alex Krstonosic began the second set with an electrifying kill out of the middle position, rattling the opposing Bruins just like she did in the opening set. As they carried their momentum from the previous set, the Hawks thrusted into a three point lead. This time though, the Bruins kept pace with the Hawks, staying just behind them for the first half of the set. At 18-15, Head Humber Coach Chris Wilkins subbed in first year setter Lauren Schneider, who reached the service line and proceeded to go onto a 5 point serving run. This placed the Bruins in a tough eight point deficit. Without taking their foot off the pedal, the Hawks offence laid down multiple kills, finishing the set off at 25-16.

The Humber Hawks continued to build on their momentum in the final set, as they quickly took the lead and ran with it. Alex Krstonosic helped the Hawks take lift off with an early five point serving run.  This pushed the Bruins into an early time out to try and reset their game. As both teams reentered the court, Humber continued to take control of the game and force the Bruins out of an offense. Olivia Foley earned the Hawks a six point serving run which dug the Bruins into an irreversible ten point deficit. After this, second year outside Danielle Miles pushed two huge kills onto the opposing court, making the score an impressive 22-11. At this point, the Hawks were flying far above the Bruins, who were unable to shorten the lead ahead of them. The final set score was 25-14.

The Hawk's lead scorers were Julia Watson and Alex Krstonosic, as they earned 8 and 10 kills each. Alex Krstonosic was also named Hawk Nation Player of the Game. Kyla Wilkins further extended the record for all-time digs in a Humber Varsity career to 541. She also currently leads Libero's I the league, ranking number 1 in the OCAA for digs this season.
