HAWKS DROP ROAD AFFAIR 3-0 AT ST.CLAIR

WINDSOR,ON: The women's volleyball team made their way to Windsor on Saturday and dropped a 3-0 match to the #4 ranked St Clair Saints.

It is time to applaud the streak that the Humber Hawks accomplished over the the last seven years, which included 155 consecutive OCAA league and playoff wins, and 11 straight OCAA champiomnship titles. The loss, although significant with regards to closing out the long run by the Hawks, puts Humber and St. Clair tied in league standings at 3-1. 

In the opening set, the Hawks started off with a magnetic kill by Alex Krstonosic and an intense ace by Alex Bartman. This momentum carried the Hawks to lead the St. Clair Saints a point at a time. Gradually though, the Hawks lost their momentum and let the Saints steal a four point lead. This forced the Hawks to call a timeout at 16-20. Although they tried to regain their momentum, the Hawks fell just short of winning the first set, losing 23-25. 

The second set was identical to the first as the Hawks went back and forth with the Saints. Once again, the Hawks began to lose their focus and fall behind St.Clair. Pushing to stay within a couple points of the Saints, Alex Krstonosic nailed out 3 blocks in a row. Denying access to their court, the Hawks now were tied with the Saints and competing point for point. Near the end of the match, the Hawks lost a couple vital points to minor errors and fell behind the Saints at an intense 23-21. The Hawks called a timeout to try and collect themselves, but ended up dropping the second set 25-21. 

The third set mirrored exactly how the previous two did. The Hawks started off strong, then slowly lost their fire as the set continued. Transitioning back and forth with the Saints for the lead, the Hawks pulled ahead and earned themselves a 22-20 lead. This led the Saints to call a timeout. Once the timeout ended the Hawks seemed to ease off the gas, dropping four points to minor errors. Coach Chris Wilkins decided to call a time out at 24-23. As the Hawks entered the court again, they lost the final point of the match to an overhead pass, losing 25-23. 

Although the Hawks sadly lost their win streak this weekend, it is important to remember how it lasted seven years, which made history in the OCAA and CCAA books. The leading scorers from the Hawks were Julia Watson with 10 kills, and Emma Heeney with 5. Libero Kyla Wilkins also added 8 kills onto her record, placing her at 454 overall digs in her career. This is the new record for all time digs in a Humber Varsity Career.
