HAWKS WIN FIRST LEG OF NORTHERN SWING 3-1 AT CAMBRIAN

Recap by Aideena Wickstrom

SUDBURY, ON: The Humber Hawks Women's Volleyball team hit the court in Sudbury today to participate in their first league away game for the OCAA season. They took on the Cambrian Golden Shield, in what became a four set rollercoaster at Cambrian's Athletic Centre.

In the opening set, Humber started off aggressively, taking a fast 6 point lead over Cambrian.  As they executed both their offence and defence perfectly, they extended their lead to a stronghold mark of 22-14. After a time out by Cambrian, the Hawks fumbled with a few of their plays. This caused the Golden Shield to gain a few points and shorten the lead to 23-19. Humber put a stop to them at this point, as they quickly put down two balls and finished off the first set 25-19

In the second set, Cambrian began to fight back, causing the Hawks to struggle. The Hawks trailed behind Cambrian in the beginning, losing points to minor errors. This did not seem to last long though, as the Hawks stole back the lead with a four point serving run to put themselves up 10-8. But with the Golden Shield hot on their tails, the Hawks could not afford to take any points off. With precision plays in the front row by Rosella Falcomer, the Hawks moved out to a 7 point lead. This aided them in finishing the set 25-19.

The Hawks come out to the third set slowly as they gave Cambrian a 3 point lead. Despite this, they were able to quickly turn their side of the court around, making the score 12-6. This lead did not last long as the Hawks allowed Cambrian to knot things up at 17-17. Unable to find their rhythm, they let the Golden Shield go on a few runs and snatch the lead from under the Hawks shoes. At 19-20, Humber lost valuable points and were unable to recover, ultimately dropping the set 25-21.

There was a slow start to the fourth set as the lead juggled back and forth. That is, until Julia Watson hit the serving line, and flew into a game changing serving run. This pushed the Hawks into a 14-8 advantage and helped fuel the Hawks throughout the rest of the set. Cambrian tried to put themselves back into the game, but the Hawks held up a strong offence and took the fourth set 25-18

Julia Watson was the lead scorer with 11 kills, and Rossella Falcomer followed behind with 9. Libero Kyla Wilkins earned six digs, putting her just 5 digs behind claiming second place for most career digs in a Humber Varsity season.
