Story by: Aideena Wickstrom

NORTH BAY, ON: The Humber Hawks hit the road to North Bay for the first time as a team on Friday afternoon, with the OUA's Nipissing Lakers awaiting them for a 5:00 pm start at the home of the Lakers.

The team had a strong start to their first game of their pre season, going point for point with the Nipissing Lakers for the first half of the set. The Hawks seemed to have lost their fire near the ending of the set, letting the Lakers sneak away with a strong lead. Two timeouts later, the Hawks fought their hardest but came just short, losing the first set of their season 25-17.

During both the second and third set, the Hawks and Lakers struggled for the lead, staying within three points of each other for the duration of both the sets. The Lakers kept the Women's team on their toes, but the Hawks kept their composure during the two intense matches, and flew to 25 with the Lakers trailing behind them.  The final scores were 25-23 and 25-21 for the Hawks.

In the fourth set, the Hawks failed to find their footing, letting Nipissing go on multiple serving runs. The Hawks fought hard to keep themselves in the battle for the set's title, but were unable to sync with each other on the court. Nipissing took the set 25-13, pushing the game into it's fifth set.

Following a rough fourth set, the Hawks fought hard, making the fifth set an intense, uncertain game. This set brought out the best plays from both teams, as they fought back and forth for the lead in the final set of their first pre-season game. Humber was able to pull away from the Lakers within the last 5 points, taking the set win 15-11, and the match 3-2.

The Humber WVB team played their whole roster, with each player being able to positively contribute to the outcome of the game. Julia Watson was considered a top contributor for the outcome of their five set win.

WHAT'S NEXT: Humber will be back on the court for two games on Saturday, starting with Canadore College at noon, and finishing the three game trip at 4:00 pm against the Niagara Knights.
