HAWKS CAN CLINCH DIVISION TITLE WITH A HOME WIN THURSDAY

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team will look to clinch their sixth straight OCAA West Division title, and a direct route to the 2017 OCAA Championships on Thursday night at home, as they will host the Redeemer Royals.

THE MATCH UP

Humber Hawks                 vs            Redeemer Royals
14-0, 1st West                                     6-8, 6th West
6:00 pm
Humber Athletic Centre – Etobicoke

LAST TIME OUT VS REDEEMER

Humber closed out the first half with a December seventh meeting in Ancaster against the Royals. Humber had to fight hard in the opening and closing sets, but had an easier time in the middle frame, winning the match 3-0 (25-23, 25-14, 25-23). Devan O'Connor, as she has done most of the season, led the Hawks on the day. Her 15 points was tops, but Brynne Spence-Coleman had a solid day, contributing 8 kills and 11 total points. Charlene DeVries turned 4 kills, 4 aces and 6 blocks into 14 points to lead Redeemer.

SCOUTING REDEEMER

  • The Royals are in a dog fight for the last remaining playoff spot in the West Division. They are a half game up on Sheridan and only a game up on Cambrian. Cambrian holds the tie breaker over Redeemer.
  • After a weak finish to the first half and a slow start to the second (5 straight losses), they have responded to win three of their last four
  • As a team their strength looks to be blocking, and they check in second in total blocks and first in blocks per set
  • Charlene DeVries continues to be the offensive force in the Royals lineup. She is first on the tam in points, kills, and aces, and is just a couple blocks short of leading that category as well

HAWK NOTES

  • The Hawks were tested in Windsor on Saturday, losing their third set of the year before responding to take the next three sets in succession.
  • Freshman Breanna Golding had a monster game on Saturday, despite only playing 2-plus sets, and she has moved into a team leading tie with Devan O'Connor. Both check in with marks of 4.0 points per set. The two sit tied for fourth in the entire league standings.
  • Humber ranks very high in many team categories, including first in hitting percentage (.329), service aces per set (3.33).
  • Humber is 22-0 all-time in regular season games against Redeemer

RECORD WATCH

  • The Hawks have won 123 consecutive OCAA league and playoff games
  • Fifth year middle Alley Newman has moved from fifth to fourth all-time at Humber in blocks (109), but is unlikely to get the 20 over the last four games to move to number three on the list
  • Head Coach Chris Wilkins currently sits in third place of all-time Hawk coaching wins with 309 victories, and only trails his brother Wayne (men's volleyball coach) by three and the overall leader Mike Katz (318) by nine.
