ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's volleyball team (7-0, 1st place) will host the St. Clair Saints (6-1, 2nd place) on Sunday afternoon in a match that will close the books on home games for the team in the Fall Season. The game, which will be played at the Humber Athletic Centre – North Campus, will begin with the first serve at 1:00 pm.
NOTE: St. Clair's game, yet to be played on Saturday at Sheridan, has not been taken into consideration
Humber has been perfect thus far, and is coming off a win on home court on Thursday night over the Mohawk Mountaineers. The Saints are also on a roll, winners of five straight. The Hawks have 18 set wins, while dropping just one. Eliminate the 3-0 loss to the Niagara Knights, St. Clair has won 18 sets and lost two. This is indeed a battle for first place in the West Division.
The Hawks seem to have different players playing big roles in each game, but none bigger than the efforts put in by veteran Devan O'Connor (Milton). The 5'11 outside hitter was honoured twice this past week, as she was named both the CCAA National and OCAA Provincial Player of the Week for women's volleyball. Devan trails Hawks scoring leader Breanna Golding (Pickering) by the shortest of margins, as she checks in with a point per set mark of 4.05, just behind Golding's 4.10.
St. Clair has an ace of their own. Kaila Crough has lit up the OCAA for a league wide second best point per set average of 4.3. The third year outside hitter from Tecumseh is supported by four players averaging above the 2.0 pps mark.
Hawks head coach Chris Wilkins, now sits at 302 career wins, after hitting the magical 300 plateau just a week ago. Big brother Wayne, the Hawks head man for the past 22 years, is just a few wins above his younger brother. Although Chris has been closing in, he would like to see both of them keep winning and pad their all-time win totals.
The Humber Athletic Centre has not been kind to the Saints. St. Clair victories in the Hawks house have been few and far between, something the Hawks hope will continue.
