300 WINS AND COUNTING: WILKINS AMONG ONTARIO’S ELITE

ETOBICOKE, ON: For over 24 years, Chris Wilkins has helped guide the lives of hundreds of varsity volleyball players, while winning a few matches along the way.

Wilkins, of Blind River, Ontario, is Humber volleyball's all-time leader in wins with 300, after reaching the milestone with a 3-1 win at Niagara College Wednesday night.

After a three year playing career with the Humber men's program, Wilkins became the assistant coach for the women's team in 1994.  Seven years and two provincial championships later, Wilkins was named co-head coach with Dave Hood, before taking sole control of the program in 2002.

A member of the Humber Varsity Hall of Fame, Wilkins has amassed an incredible 242-11 (.957 win percentage) regular season and 42-5 (.894 win percentage) OCAA postseason record.  The five-time OCAA Coach of the Year has also won 16 Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matches, including three last season that led to the programs first-ever national medal.

Wilkins has worked to create a program that sets a high standard, and it goes beyond simply just showing up.  It's about working hard and putting team goals above individual ones.  Using that system, Humber has won 11 provincial championships – including the last nine – and 14 OCAA medals in total.  In 15-plus seasons, Chris Wilkins' teams have averaged 15.8 wins per regular season, finishing with a perfect record eight times.

More impressively, the 2009 CCAA Coach of the Year is in the midst of the greatest win-streak in all of collegiate athletics.  The Streak, which began during the playoffs in 2011, currently sits at 114 consecutive conference matches, after Wednesday's win at Niagara.  Over that span, the Hawks have a perfect 96-0 regular season and 18-0 postseason record.

Wilkins also understands the importance of academics in his student-athletes' future success, which is why his team consistently has the highest grade point average among all varsity programs at Humber College.  Over the last eight academic years, ten volleyball student-athletes have been named CCAA Academic All-Canadians, the CCAA's most prestigious honour.  The award epitomises the student-athletes commitment to academic success and athletic achievement.

Under his guidance and leadership, numerous student-athletes have returned to the volleyball program as coaches.  These alumni want to share their experiences and inspire current Humber Hawks to achieve the highest levels of success, both on and off the court.

The 300 wins for Wilkins makes him the third coach in Humber athletics history to reach such an exclusive milestone.  Chris joins CCAA Hall of Famer Mike Katz and his brother and current men's volleyball head coach Wayne Wilkins as the only coaches to accomplish this feat.
