No. 4 WOMEN'S SOCCER FALL TO FANSHAWE IN PROVINCIAL CHAMPIONSHIP

TORONTO, Ont – The No. 4 Humber women's soccer team's bid for the program's eighth provincial championship came up short when the Hawks fell to No. 6 Fanshawe 3-2 in overtime. With the loss, the Hawks conclude the season as the OCAA silver medal winners for the third straight year, ending 2018 with a 12-1-0 record.

All-Canadian Jade Kovacevic was the difference for the Falcons, recording one goal and one assist. The former national team member scored in the 16th minute, blasting a shot by keeper Vanessa Fiore.

Despite trailing for the first time all season long, the Hawks never panicked, controlling the pace and possession in the first half, but was unable to find the back of the net.

Fanshawe looked to extend its lead to start the second half when Kovacevic broke free and fired a shot on net but Vanessa Fiore made a spectacular diving save, keeping the Hawks within striking distance.

In the 65th minute, Humber tied the match off the boot of freshman Lily Campbell. On a corner kick from Rebecca Spratt, Stephanie Gutierrez's header bounced in front of Campbell for the match-tying tap-in.

As time ran down and overtime looming, a bad bounce off the wet turf gave Fanshawe the lead in the 82nd minute.

Claudia Piazza – who demonstrated why she is one of the top players in the province all match long – drew a foul in the box in the 90th minute. Giulia Zanardi converted the penalty kick, stunning the Falcons and forcing overtime.

In the early minutes of the extra period, Kovacevic struck again, crossing a beautiful ball, giving Nicole Nielson an easy header for the game-winning goal.

Claudia Piazza and Lily Campbell were named championship all-stars.
