WOMEN GRAB SILVER AFTER TIGHT 2-1 LOSS TO ALGONQUIN

SUDBURY, ON: On a cold and brisk fall day, the Humber Hawks played well enough to win gold, but in the end it was a tight 2-1 loss to the defending champions from Algonquin. This was the second consecutive year that the Hawks have taken silver, but this year it was a solid performance that saw the team outshoot and dominate the game at points.

Algonquin opened the scoring in the first half off a corner kick that was re-directed into the back of the Hawks goal. From that point on, the Thunder pulled back into a defence first mode, and allowed Humber to control most of the play in the midfield.

The Ottawa club then scored at the 73^rd minute mark off a free kick, once again re-directed in on a nice strike.  

Refusing to die, Humber struck for their first and only goal of the game just minutes later, as Danielle Canhoto drilled the ball into the net after the Thunder keeper misplayed the ball.

The Hawks had another opportunity to score and tie the game, but the Algonquin keeper was able to corral a free kick as it flew into the box.

With time running out, Algonquin played long balls and then took the ball to the Hawks end to delay. The tactic worked perfectly, as time ran out.

Rachel Spratt, for the second consecutive game, was the Humber Player of the Game.

Claudia Piazza and Alexandra Giannone were honoured as tournament all-stars.
