2019 Season Preview: Humber Women's Basketball

ETOBICOKE – Humber women's basketball will return to the court Oct. 18, beginning the 2019-20 OCAA season on a three-game road trip. The Hawks will open the season against Redeemer, with tip-off set for 6 p.m.

2018-19 Highlights

• Humber basketball made a postseason appearance for the 29th consecutive appearance.
• Second-year guard Makeba Taylor averaged 5.0 assists-per-game – the most in the West Division.
• The Hawks finished the season with a 19-4 record.
• Humber's OCAA win streak came to an end at 81 – the longest in OCAA history.

At the Helm
Ajay Sharma returns to the sidelines for his ninth season as the all-time winningest head coach in program history.  Sharma has directed the Hawks to a period of unprecedented prosperity in the form of four CCAA tournament appearances – including the first national championship in program history – and four OCAA provincial titles.  Sharma owns a 161-26 career record.

Kern Lewis (Ninth Year), Kingsley Hudson (Eighth Year), Aycha Hamaoui-Askarov (Sixth Year), and Jeremy Alleyne (Third Year) will return for another season on Humber's coaching staff.

Blast from the Past
Two-time national champion Felicia Velasquez returns to the lineup for the Humber Hawks. The fourth-year guard sits second all-time at Humber with 209 career assists.

2016 National Champion Amber Bechard returns for her senior season after studying abroad in England.

Pushing Forward
The Hawks will look to the leadership of returning players Jahnae Gyles, Miea Campbell-Johnson, and Brittney English to carry on the strong winning tradition of Humber basketball.

Senior Jahnae Gyles enters her third season with Humber and currently sits 13th on Humber's career scoring list with 490 points. The Mississauga native is also third all-time with 90 career 3-pointers made.

Fourth-year forward Miea Campbell-Johnson enters her fourth season 19th all-time in scoring, and sixth with 303 career rebounds.

Warm Welcome
Ajay Sharma and his coaching staff added seven new faces to the 2019 roster.

Six of the new recruits all feature post-secondary experience, while highly touted recruit Kia Watt joins the roster as a true freshman.

2019-20 Schedule

• Nine of Humber's 20 regular-season games will be played at the North Campus Gym.
• Four of Humber's opponents made the OCAA Final Eight last season: St. Clair, Fanshawe, Niagara, and Sheridan.
• The 2020 OCAA Championship will be hosted by St. Clair, March 6-8.
