BRAMPTON, ON: The number eleven ranked Humber Hawks (18-2, 2nd West) women's basketball team concluded their season with a defensive show, beating their long-time rival Sheridan Bruins (15-5, 3rd West) by a score of 58-47.
Brittney English led the way for the Hawks on Friday night. English finished with a game-high 13 points to go along with a stellar defensive performance. Miea Campbell-Johnson finished with a double-double 12 points and 13 rebound, while Laura Meadows also finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
The Hawks had arguably their best defensive performance of the season, holding the Bruins to shoot 20 percent for the game (15 – 73). Laura Meadows took control of the paint early-on, helping Humber go into the second quarter with a 17-11 lead. Jahnae Gyles who has been on a tear as of late, was forced to leave the game. With their lead scorer out, the Hawks had a tough time getting shots to fall. Despite the defensive performance, Humber saw Sheridan outscore them 13-11 in the second quarter. Despite the Bruins run, Hawks went into halftime with a 28-24 lead.
Despite having a game-high 30 turnovers, the Hawks made up for it by ramping up their efforts defensively. Sheridan features two players in the top-ten in scoring, in Theresa Brown (17.1 PPG) and Sydney Charvis (16.1 PPG). Humber was effective in not allowing them to produce any consistent offence. Brown finished the game shooting 19 percent from the field (4-21), while Charvis finished the game shooting 17 percent (3-17) from the field.
Brittney English stepped up big on defence, and was shutting down her opponents. The feisty guard also helped her team pull away after knocking down back-to-back threes to open the third.
Humber continued to show why they lead the league in rebounding, as they outrebounded Sheridan 53-38 on the night.
What's Next?
Humber will begin its title defence against the Georgian Grizzlies (3-13, 7th East) next Friday night. Although the Hawks have secured a home playoff spot by way of their second place finish in the West Division, they will have to do so away from the friendly confines of the Humber Athletic Centre. The Hawks gym is not available because Humber is hosting the 2019 OCAA Men's Volleyball Championship so the game is set for a 8:00 p.m. tip at the University of Toronto – Mississauga (UTM) gymnasium on Friday, February 22.
