NOFUENTE TO REPRESENT CANADA AT 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES

Humber legend Ceejay Nofuente will play for Canada when the team debuts at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games April 4 – 15, 2018 in Australia.


ETOBICOKE, Ont -- Fresh off her second CCAA National Championship, Humber senior Ceejay Nofuente has been named to the Canada Basketball National Team for the upcoming 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia April 4 – 15, 2018.

"It's an honour to represent Canada on the national stage," said Ceejay Nofuente, who recently won her third consecutive CCAA Player of the Year award.  "To play basketball at such a high level and to move up within Canada basketball truly is a dream come true."

Canada's women's team will be making its first-ever appearance at the Commonwealth Games, opening the eight-team tournament on April 6 against England at 4:30 a.m. ET from the Townsville Entertainment and Convention Centre. Fans in Canada can catch all the action streaming live on DAZN.

The women's team will compete in Pool A, which features: 2006 Commonwealth Women's Basketball Champions Australia, England, and Mozambique.

Nofuente remains as the only CCAA student-athlete on the 12-player roster and is one of six guards to make the squad.

Last month it was announced that Steve Baur, an assistant coach with the senior women's national team will lead the women's team in Australia.

In addition to basketball, Team Canada 2018 will be taking part in 17 sports and seven para-sports at the Gold Coast Games, with over 260 athletes expected to be named to the team.

In August 2017, Nofuente made her international debut for Canada Basketball. A first time member of the Development Women's National Team that went to compete at the 2017 FISU Games in Taipei, Taiwan, where Canada finished seventh.

Prior to the games, the team competed in the U24 Four Nations tournament in Tokyo, Japan where she played in all three games averaging 20.5 minutes per game and 10.3 points per game. While she was at the FISU Games she averaged 22.4 minutes per game, and 7.7 points per game. 

Commonwealth Games History
 
The Commonwealth Games is an international multi-sport event involving athletes from the Commonwealth of Nations. The event was first held in 1930 and has taken place every four years since then.

The most recent Commonwealth Games were held in Glasgow, Scotland in 2014. The Commonwealth Games were known as the British Empire Games from 1930–1950, the British Empire and Commonwealth Games from 1954–1966, and British Commonwealth Games from 1970–1974.
