The Storyline
Top-ranked Humber women's basketball will open the 2018 CCAA National Championship on Mar. 15 against the MSVU Mystics. Tipoff is set for noon EST (1 p.m. ADT), and the live stream can be found here.

Last Time Out
Humber rolled to its fourth consecutive provincial title Mar. 4, defeating No. 11 Fanshawe 69-54 at the North Campus Gym. The Hawks held the Falcons to eight points in the first quarter, jumping out to an 18-point lead after ten minutes of play.

Ceejay Nofuente was named tournament MVP for the third straight year, becoming only the second player in league history to accomplish the feat. In the three-day tournament, Nofuente averaged 10.6 points, 12.3 rebounds, 7.6 assists, 5.6 steals, and 2.3 blocks per game.

Aleena Domingo and Leticia Lopez were named tournament all-stars for Humber. Domingo received the honour for the second straight year after averaging 18.3 points and 12.0 rebounds, while Lopez shot 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from 3-point range.

Scouting No. 8 MSVU

  • MSVU rolled through the ACAA regular season, finishing with a 17-1 record. The Mystics blew a 16-point lead in the ACAA title game, falling to Mount Allison 77-71 in overtime.
  • The Mystics led the conference in scoring, averaging 81.0 ppg, shooting 39.3 percent (496-of-1261) from the floor.
  • MSVU is led by All-Canadian Kate Gallant, who finished the year averaging 16.1 ppg on 50.8 percent (93-of-183) shooting.
  • MSVU head coach Mark Forward was named ACAA Coach of the Year.

Last Meeting
These two programs have only met once on the national stage, with Humber coming away with an 89-23 victory in the 1998 quarter-final. The 66-point victory was Humber's largest win in CCAA tournament history.

CCAA History

  • Humber is the only OCAA program to win a women's basketball national title (2016).
  • The Hawks have won six of their last seven CCAA games and own a 14-15 (.483) all-time CCAA record.
  • Under head coach Ajay Sharma, the Hawks are 8-3 (.727) at nationals.
  • All-time, Humber is 3-6 (.333) in the quarter-final round.

Player of the Year
Senior Ceejay Nofuente won her third consecutive OCAA Player of the Year award, becoming the first player to accomplish the feat.

Nofuente joins legends Patrick Rhodd, Kelly Nyhof and Joanna Vitale as the only league sports players at Humber to be named an All-Canadian three times.

All-Ontario
Senior Aleena Domingo was named a first-team all-star, while also garnering West Division Defensive Player of the Year honours. Domingo was one of six players to average a double-double this season.

Freshman guard Makeba Taylor was named to the OCAA All-Rookie team after playing in 19 games for top-ranked Humber this season. The Toronto native led the team in 3-point efficiency, shooting 51.6 percent (16-of-31) from behind the arc. Taylor joins teammates Aleena Domingo and Felicia Velasquez as active Hawks to be named to the all-rookie team.

The CCAA Tournament
Humber has won national medals in consecutive years, the longest active streak in the country.

The Hawks have been to four straight CCAA tournaments, the second longest streak. Collège Montmorency owns the longest active streak with six.

What's Next
If No. 1 Humber beats MSVU, the Hawks will advance to the semifinal round and play the winner of the Montmorency/St. Mary's quarter-final on Mar. 16 at 5 p.m. EST (6 p.m. ADT).
