DOMINGO JOINS 300-POINT CLUB IN WIN OVER ST. CLAIR

By: Nick Suddes

ETOBICOKE, Ont -- No.1 Humber women's basketball (19-0, 1st West) hosted the St. Clair Saints (10-8, 5th West) for Grad Night Saturday evening at the Humber North Campus Gym. Humber sent off its four graduating student-athletes in style, defeating the Saints, 93-68.

Humber struggled shooting early on, hitting 35 percent from the field and knocking down just one of their ten 3-point attempts in the quarter. Shannon Kennedy led the way for the Saints in the frame finishing with 14 in the quarter. Kennedy became the all-time leading scorer in OCAA history knocking down a three early on in the first quarter. The poor shooting resulted in a second straight first-quarter deficit for the Hawks as they trailed 23-20.

Humber would bounce back in the second, retaking the lead early, jumping out on a quick 12-4 run and would never look back. Aleena Domingo led the surge for the team putting up nine points in the quarter going a perfect 4-for-4 in the frame. The Saints were able to keep pace thanks to a solid quarter from guard Logan Kucera, who finished with ten in the quarter. The Hawks finished the half up four outscoring the Saints by seven in the second quarter.

The Hawks came out with much more energy to start the second half, quickly taking a double-digit lead thanks to their improved play on both ends. Humber held St. Clair to just 12 points in the quarter on 24 percent shooting, forcing the Saint into turnovers and bad shots all quarter. The offence still struggled to shoot from beyond the arc but Humber compensated by feasting on the glass with 15 boards in the frame and getting to the rim for layups. By the time the third quarter was over Humber had built a 19 point lead blowing the game wide open.

The final quarter didn't go much better for the Saints, as Humber's depth became more apparent the longer the game went on. With more weapons on both ends of the floor, the Hawks were able to run the Saints starters ragged as they struggled to keep pace playing heavy minutes. By the final buzzer, the Hawks would end up by 25 points.

Five Humber players finished with double figures in scoring, with Domingo leading the way with her 23 points.

The Hawks Nation Player of the Game was awarded to all four graduating players for the Hawks, Ceejay Nofuente, Aleena Domingo, Stephanie Antwi, and Beryl Mefful.
