ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks ran their record to 7-0 with a 92-63 win at home over the Mohawk Mountaineers.
The highly anticipated game between the 1st and 2nd place teams in the West ended with a huge statement win for Humber. The Hawks never looked back after a flurry to start the game, beginning with Miea Campbell-Johnson, who continues to dominant inside, further showing her consistency by opening up the game with a nice shot in the paint. Humber was very efficient in the quarter, going 10-21 from the field (47%) while the Mountaineers were held to 20% shooting. Ceejay Nofuente scored 18 points in the first quarter alone. Nofuente also had 3 rebounds, 4 steals, and 1 assist in the quarter, on 5-6 shooting (3-4 from long range) and was also 5-5 at the free throw line. Humber took command early, with a 30-9 lead after the opening quarter.
Mohawk heavily improved in the 2nd quarter, as the Mountaineers leading scorer, Stef Hrymak (15.7 PPG) helped her team answer back with 10 points in the quarter. Mohawk was only out scored by a 4 point margin and shot at a 41 percent clip. Despite Nofuente only attempting one shot, the Hawks displayed the multiple offensive options they possess, with 7 different players scoring in the quarter. Laura Meadows and Jahnae Gyles lead the charge for Humber, both coming off the bench and scoring 5 and 7 points respectively. After two quarters of play, Humber had a 55-30 advantage.
In the 3rd quarter, Humber's defense continued to play a factor in the game, this time with the Mountaineers shooting 26%. Jahnae Gyles matched her 2nd quarter output with 7 points, further proving to be a threat from long distance as well. Nofuente had 6 points, followed by 3 assists and steals. Humber continued to dominate inside the paint, this time with former all-star Aleena Domingo, who had 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 2 assists, which all came in only six minutes of action. Only two players scored for the Mountaineers in the quarter, but Shanien O'Neil provided a much needed spark for the team, giving them 8 points off the bench. Humber outscored Mohawk 25-12 in the quarter, giving them an 80-42 lead heading into the 4th.
Mohawk still displayed a lot of fight, Stef Hrymak made two 3-pointers in the quarters, and Emily Suriani also added in 7 points within the quarter. The inside presence was too much for the Mountaineers to overcome, as Aleena Domingo's big second half carried over in the 4th quarter. Humber's bench played the majority of the minutes down the stretch, as the Hawks closed the game out with a 92-63 win, making them the only undefeated team in the conference.
