HAWKS ROLL TO EASY 109-19 WIN OVER SAULT COUGARS

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks women's basketball team continues to roll offensively and defensively as they knocked off the Sault Cougars 109-19 in their home opener.

Coming into the game, The Hawks only allowed 38 points per game on 24% shooting, making them the best defensive team in the OCAA. They showcased their defensive prowess early in the game, taking advantage by converting 16 points off 7 turnovers. Miea Campbell-Johnson put the Hawks on the board first with a shot in the paint. Campbell-Johnson ended up finishing the first half with 8 points. Every Humber starter scored in the first half, with all-stars Ceejay Nofuente filling up the stat-sheet with 6 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, and 3 steals, along with Aleena Domingo, who had 6 points, 3 assists, and 1 steal. Further production came from the bench with Eboni Beals scoring 8 points in 4 minutes of play. After one quarter, Humber was up 29-5.

The defensive intensity remained at a high level for Humber in the second quarter, continuing to force turnovers and allowing their defense to help set up their offense. Mackenzie Mazzuca, Autumn Hay-Beharriel, and Alexandra Cooper were the only players to make a field goal for Sault heading into the first half. Humber's bench outscored the Cougars 24-0, and the Humber Hawks took their largest lead of the game (47 points) as they concluded the first half with Humber in command, 54-7.

Miea Campbell-Johnson began the 3rd quarter in similar fashion, who continued to be a focal point for the Hawks, as they continued to attack the Cougars defense deep inside the paint. With her play in the post, Campbell-Johnson finished with 6 points in the quarter. Jahnae Gyles had 2 three pointers, and Nofuente led the way defensively with 4 steals. Sault immediately picked up their pace in the second half, with 2nd year guard Mercedes Ryan putting in a strong effort on both ends of the court. The Cougars ended up scoring more in any quarter previously played, but they were still trailing 86-13.

In the 4th quarter, the Humber bench was able to get ample playing time and capped off their performance by scoring 11 points. Mercedes Ryan continued to battle for the Cougars, getting 3 points, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals in the quarter. Sault shot 2-21 in the final quarter, with Alexandra Cooper scoring the other field goal for the Cougars. Ceejay Nofuente had 3 steals, 3 assists, and 5 points, giving her a triple double to round up a fine outing. Nofuente finished the game by shooting 4-5 from the field and at the free-throw line, giving her 13 points, 10 steals, 11 assists (with only 1 turnover), and 5 rebounds. Every Humber Hawk player that attempted a shot ended up making a basket. Campbell-Johnson was the leading scorer of the game with 16 points. Beryl Mefful and Eboni Beals led the bench in scoring with 10 points apiece.

The player of the game was Jahnae Gyles, who had 14 points (with 4 three pointers), on 5-7 shooting from the field to go along with 2 steals, 2 rebounds, and an assist. Both teams will wrap up their double header Sunday afternoon (November 5th) at 1:00 PM. Afterwards, the Humber Hawks will play their next game back at home against the Redeemer Royals on November 11th.
