HAWKS ON FIRE IN 3-0 SWEEP OF SHERIDAN BRUINS TO OPEN 2ND HALF

ETOBICOKE, ON: The Humber Hawks Mens volleyball team started off the New Year right with a win on home court on Thursday, January 10^th. Hosting the Sheridan Bruins (3-7), the Hawks (9-1) downed their visitors in three straight sets. (25-13, 25-12, 25-14)

In the first set, the Hawks wasted no time in taking a seven point lead. Creating a wall-like block at the net, Andrew Blakey and Jake Gomes were a key part to Humber's gameplay. The score was 6-3 when Rafael Hilario hit the service line. By the time he was done, the score was now 13-3, and the Bruins had used one of their timeouts. In a grueling ten point deficit, Sheridan began to fall under the pressure that the Hawks were serving them. Making multiple unforced errors in a row, they allowed Humber's Andrew Blakey to also go on a huge serving run. Head Sheridan coach called a timeout to regroup at 18-6, but it rendered useless to their huge deficit. The final score was 25-13.

Kamyn Wilkins opened the second set with a huge kill from the outside, asserting the Hawks restlessness. As Humber continued executing perfectly, the Bruins made it a pattern to make unforced errors. With huge kills from Rafael Hilario, the point difference between the Hawks and Bruins continued to widen. Not wanting to let the Hawks fly any further from them, the Sheridan coach called a timeout at 19-9. Reentering the game, the Hawks continued to topple over the Bruins. The set was quickly over, with Humber doubling Sheridan's score, at 25-12.

The third set resembled the second as Humber took a quick lead. Carrying momentum from the previous two sets, the Hawks court was overflowing with energy. First year Right side Rafael Hilário landed a huge kill on the opposing court right away, pushing the Bruins to call an early 10-4 timeout. Sheridan's main downfall came as they were unable to go on any impactful serving runs, making a total of 20 serving errors within the entirety of the match. A serving run by Jake Gomes pushed the Bruins into their second timeout of the match at 16-7. Coming out of this, the Bruins seemed unable to connect their game plan to their game play. Being unable to return the majority of the Hawks offence, the Bruins quickly were pushed into a 24-13 situation. The game was finished as Sheridan Setter Po-an Chien, nailed a serve outside of the court. The final score was 25-14.

The Hawks had a successful return to the court in 2019, as they were able to play their whole bench, and still come out with a 3-0 victory. Hawk Nation Player of the Game was given to first year outside hitter Eduardo Silva Ferreira, who managed to earn the Hawks two blocks, one dig, and one kill.
