ETOBICOKE, Ont. – The Humber Hawks men's volleyball team (11-2, 2nd West) continued their winning ways on Friday night, stretching their win streak to ten games as they came out on top against the Mohawk Mountaineers (5-7, 7th West) in three straight sets (25-18, 25-20, 25-20) at the North Campus gym.
The first set saw the Hawks build a lead before losing it to a four-point Mountaineers rally. The Hawks would retake and lose the lead again before a four-point streak on David Fountain's serving gave them a lead they would not relinquish. Despite Mohawk's best efforts, Humber would continue to pull ahead on the scoreboard, in part thanks to excellent play from Kamyn Wilkins, with Clayton Blanchette dealing the Mountaineers the final blow as the Hawks took the first set 25-18.
In the second set the Hawks struck first, gaining a lead that they maintained for the entire set. A stretch of five straight points led by Fountain gave the Hawks an eight-point lead, though the Mountaineers would fight fiercely to try and come back. Deflating the Hawks' cushion to three points late in the set, the Mountaineers' comeback fell short as the Hawks ultimately claimed the second by a score of 25-20.
In the closest and most competitive set of the night, the Hawks and Mountaineers aggressively fought over the lead in the third. While the Hawks held a slight advantage on the scoreboard through most of the set, neither team was able to string together any significant rallies. The Mountaineers, after tying the score repeatedly but failing to pull ahead, surpassed the Hawks on three straight points from Rafael Leite's serving to take a late two-point lead, 20-18. After a Jake Gomes serving ace tied the game back up at 20 apiece, however, the Hawks offense ignited, scoring seven straight points and closing out the set with another Blanchette slam to finish off the Mountaineers 25-20 and win the match.
Blanchette led the Hawks in points with 16 (11 kills, three serving aces, two blocks). Andrew Blakey had nine points (eight kills, one serving ace) while Wilkins (seven kills) and Fountain (five kills, two serving aces) both had seven. Rady Kim was named the Hawks Nation Player of the Game after the win.
Joel Van Dyke of the Mountaineers led his team with ten points (six kills, one serving ace, three blocks).
With the victory, the Hawks improve to 11-2 on the season, moving into second place in the West standings. The Mountaineers fall to a 5-7 record with the loss.
Up next for the Hawks is a road matchup against the Redeemer Royals (10-3, 3rd West) on Feb. 2. The game is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m.
